More educational shows for today's kids

I grew up in the 90's on PBS. My parents use to always put it on PBS (channel) for us because they felt like these shows would make us smarter. This channel showed a variety of different educational shows like Barney, Sesame Street, the magic school bus, reading rainbow, between the lions and more. I did watch non educational shows sometimes but most of the shows were educational. I feel like nowadays many shows aren't so educational. I work with kids 3-6 yrs old and most don't watch cartoons or anything educational, they are actually watching Disney which barely shows any cartoons. They are watching teen shows like "Austin and ally" or "girl meets world" I asked them why aren't they watching shows that will teach them things and they tell me those shows are for babies. Some of these kids don't even know their ABC's or how to count up to 20. I plan to make my child watch the shows that I grew up on so that he will learn and be prepared for school. It will have a positive effect on him and broaden his knowledge. Did your kids watch educational shows or just regular cartoons and tv shows Or all all the above? And do you think that they need to make more educational shows for younger kids?
