What Is IQ?

When it comes to the brain, learning and thinking skills Tony Buzan is the world's leading advisor, lecturer and author on the subject. He is the enventor of Mind Maps(mental literacy and mind mapping) and his work has been published in 30 languages in 100 countries. The Mind Mapping[registered] is a thinking tool popularly called the Swiss army knife of the brain which is now used by over 250 million people world-wide. But how do you measure intelligence? IQ is a number that measures a person's cognitive abilities or intelligence. This is in relation to their age. An IQ between 90 and 110 is considered to be average and over 120 is superior. About 70% of the population's IQ is between 85 and 115. About 95% is between 70 and 130 and anything below 70 is considered mentally retarded. But a person who scores 100 in one population could score higher or lower in another. According to the Guinness Book of World Records the highest IQ belongs to the Marilyn vos Savant who was 10 years old when he was scored. There is some controversy as to the validity of the testing in her case. This would correspond to about 185 at an adult age. That score is only surpassed by Kim-Ung_Yong of S.Korea with a score of over 200 and that of chess champion Bobby Fisher at 187. Multiple IQ tests are usually more accurate. These give a more accurate account of a person's overall intelligence and are usually divided to give an overall average. If a standard test is affected by emotions, anxiety, mood or biochemistry the multiple testing would give a more accurate representation of a person's intelligence.

My hunch is that IQ tests have fairly high test-retest reliability, but it's true that ones emotions, etc. can affect scores.

There should be a full range of questions. That is why taking it several times would be good.

My take is..you have this much box...you have fifty percent for emotions and fifty percent for unemotional intelligence. Having more of unemotional intelligence is as much of an abnormality as having more of emotional intelligence. So having high IQ should not be considered good! Such folks might fail in establishing friendships because everything goes mathematical in their brains.

@vandana7 I don't know if emotional/social intelligence and intellectual intelligence are correlated or not. I doubt that they're inversely correlated.

A person's IQ can be extremely difficult to measure. Even if you undergo 10 tests and take an average, the fact still remains that another 10 tests would produce a different average. When I took the British Mensa entry test many years ago I was given an IQ score of 168. However, I always enjoyed the type of mental questions that are involved in such a test, so in reality I would probably score better than a more intelligent person who disliked those type of posers.

I would think they would vary within a limited range.

@TheHorse Most likely, but there is also the aspect of those type of tests suiting me more than others.

@Asylum ........An accurate testing would have a full range of questions, not just suited to one over another.

@celticeagle Common sense doesn't necessarily remind you that opposite angles are the same, and that the angles of two crossed lines add up to 360. Or does it?

I do not know how Bobby Fisher fared in his life. But of what use is intelligence if it isolates them? Or their intellect cannot be utilized for the required objectives? I would rather remain fifty fifty.

@TheHorse .....That's true. So the average would be more distinct than other wise.

Yep. But there's still going to be a pretty good deal of consistency. Just like with political polls, there's a "confidence interval."

IQ does not mean a person will be successful in life. Kesha who is one of the trashiest popstars ever have an IQ considered as Genius,She just got involved in multiple scandals. There is a genius guy who ends up as a cashier at Wallmart.

Look at the genius character ,Sheldon, on The Big Bang Theory. He is socially awkward and very self absorbed.

I have a question. Assuming there are a number of questions that determine IQ it would require some kind of quality in questions right? Well if a person's brain is the size of say a pea and can answer some of the questions reasonably well but not all, what would that mean on test day?

If their brains were the size of a pea they should probably go another direction and IQ testing would not be of much help.

@celticeagle I was referring to the ability of tests to draw an accurate picture. But okay from the perspective you took I was thinking about how much of the brain would be utilized as in attention.

I'm intelligent on some things but dumb as a rock on other things. The IQ tests are useless.
