A friend was giving a talk in Preston today on his experiences in the Hare Krishna sect, and though I find such cult-groups controversial, I went along to listen and show moral support. He coped well with a restless audience and I avoided asking too many awkward questions. Next month I am giving a talk to the same community centre on pub signs. The centre gave everyone drinks (non-alcoholic), cakes and donuts for coming along. There was supposed to be a poetry and music event at a church in Preston in the evening but I arrived to find it locked and darkened so I just came home, preparing for my weekend in Manchester starting tomorrow. I bought a replacement coach ticket having stupidly lost one during my time between the talk and the non-event in the evening. Arthur Chappell

Ah, got some good plans for this weekend? My housemate and I have a couple things we might do, last I checked not sure there had been a definitive one or the other. Either way, I don't mind, as long as I wont be stuck alone for too long, still not doing well with longs bouts of being alone.

@arthurchappell I found a renaissance festival much closer than other plans, I may toss that out for an idea for tomorrow.

So, is your friend still a part of that sect or was he sharing about what some might call evils of the group? Can people share about whatever they want to this group and do most people attend? Or, maybe just those that know the speaker in some way or that want to know about whatever it is being discussed are the main audience? Too bad about losing your ticket. Wasnt' it tucked away in your wallet or somewhere else that's safe? If you find it later can you get a refund?

doubt if they would refund me sadly - my friend is still in the sect and more sympathetic to it than I am - the talks are arranged by the community centre and many local people are regular attenders - they are keen to find speakers with unusual interesting stuff to talk about. The centre helped my friend a lot with preparing his powerpont slides and they put on a tremendous buffet which may well be the biggest draw there rather than the talks - after a first visit, attenders are expected to pay a modest fee for going which is a good way to do it

I would have enjoyed that talk. My Sister-in-law's brother-in-law was being 'groomed' into joining the Hare Krishna's in CzechLand, but I think his wife then left him and he then decided he didn't want to be a part of them. It's scary how they get you involved.
