You may remember my yellow and black garden spider that was on one of my shepherd's hooks at my house. I told you that she would die when the weather got too cold, but would leave an egg sack to overwinter. My image is what she left behind. She disappeared some time ago. I do not know if it got too cold one night or if something like a large bird ate her. This papery looking egg sack is about as big as those giant jaw breaker candies.

Will you leave it there? I wouldn't fancy having lots of baby spiders around come Spring.

I find myself considering moving that egg sack, wondering if it would survive.

I probably will leave it, unless I get really motivated and get it moved soon. Maybe move the entire hook.

I know that brown recluse and wolf spiders are a bit aggressive, but I try to have a live and let live attitude.

I have heard that spiders make egg sacks with their sticky threads, but never have known what the egg sacks are like.

Just as various birds make unique nests, so the spiders have unique egg sacks. Others I have seen have been smaller, white, fluffy balls. I am glad to be able to share this.

That is sad that she is gone. Maybe she moved on.

Bugs and insects have such short life spans and what I read about her indicated that she would not live through the cold weather.

nice of her to leave you a going away present.... if they stay outside that's ok ... I'm surprised that they can survive winter temps in that egg sack though....

I guess that is one of the "miracles of nature". I think they are much more insulated than we realize, but I am not going to cut it open to see.
