While celebrating the Cubs' first appearance in the World Series since the end of World War II I forgot to post my next song in my countdown of my favorite different songs that have the identical title. This title could probably inspire a top twenty countdown all by itself.
#8: Crazy
Yeah, there are only two songs named "Crazy."
Okay, let me clarify that: there are only two songs named "Crazy" on my iPod.
As with the last song ("Pick Me Up on Your Way Down"), one of these songs belongs to Patsy Cline. And I do mean belongs to her. Yeah, Willie Nelson wrote it, and 70 or 80 million people have covered it, but you won't find a better version than the one Patsy Cline recorded in 1961.
Then there's the song that was recorded by the Athens, Georgia band, Pylon. Never heard of them? Truthfully, neither had I...until R.E.M. covered the song and released it as the B-side to "Driver 8" (and if you're the least bit interested, "Driver 8" is the name of my current car...because it's the eighth car I've owned
). I love R.E.M.'s version of the song, much more than the Pylon original. I was thrilled when "Crazy" (the Pylon song) was R.E.M.'s first encore song when I saw them in 1989.
This may be the weirdest mix of the same title on the countdown...if not, it's close!
Crazy
Patsy Cline song
Written by Willie Nelson
Released as a single, 1961
R.E.M. version
Written by Randy Bewley, Vanessa Briscoe, Curtis Crowe, and Michael Lachowski
Released as the B-side of "Driver 8," 1985 (and on Dead Letter Office, 1987)
Winner:
Aw, come on, is this even a contest?? Patsy!
Here's the R.E.M. cover of the Pylon song, which I love but it pales in comparison to the Patsy song called "Crazy":
