Moving the Space Shuttle Endeavor to the California Science Museum was not a cheap proposition. Above is a photo of the moving bill to "transfer excess personal property." Actually, saying that it cost $2 billion was a bit of an exaggeration. It actualy "only" cost $1,980,674,785. I thought it was a little hilarious to refer to the space shuttle as "excess personal property." I couldn't help but wonder if Pauletta K. McGinnis, the NASA/KSC Property Disposal Officer who signed this nearly $2 billion bill, was a bit shocked by the cost! I thought moving my household goods to a new home was expensive!

Moving those things is extremely expensive. I remember when the Italian submarine "Enrico Toti" was moved to the Science Museum in Milan, they had to stop the traffic in many areas to move the big ship around.

@LadyDuck - I imagine it is really expensive to move a big ship, too! It's great that they keep these things for people to see up close ... but it is expensive!

@DeborahDiane Yes it's good to keep these things. It was surely very expensive to move the submarine, because the museum where it is now (in Milano) is 350 Km from the closest sea.

@LadyDuck - Wow! That is amazing that they moved a submarine 350 km from the closest ocean. Incredible!

When you consider how much money you have, and how much the government has, you are probably paid more for your move than they did.

@ElizabethWallace - Good point about the ratio between the percentage the government paid for this move as opposed to the percentage of our money that we paid for our move! Now I think I was ripped off! LOL

@ElizabethWallace - Same thing happened to us. We used the same company to move, but we had less stuff. Despite that, they wanted more money. However, the government says we don't have inflation, which is why the Social Security increases have been so small ... or nonexistent some years.

@DeborahDiane Probably. I know I was. I used the same company to move the same stuff (although fewer boxes each time) the same distance for three moves. (sigh) Each time it cost almost $1,000 more.

@DeborahDiane one'f the bad thingies 'bout the government 'tis their 'budget' - if'n they don't spend 't all by the end'f their physical year, 't seems they cannot get funds they do need fer the next year. ridiculous... i agree with ya! makes ya wonder what brilliant soul came'p with such? why'd they've the need fer such a category anyhow?

@crazyhorseladycx - Yes, when they are using government money, the sky's the limit! Hilarous they call it "excess personal property!"

Why does it cost that much? I could move from here to there, even with all of my guitars and stereo gear, for a couple of thousand.

I had to read that number twice before it sunk in how much it cost to move it. NASA is government funded isn't it? Shouldn't the government have paid for it? You're right, moving your household is nothing in comparison.

@just4him - Yes, NASA is part of the government and they paid for the move ... or, I guess we taxpayers paid for it. It was incredibly expensive!

Darn it! why can they just use it again? rather than moving it from one museum to another.

@Letranknight2015 - Apparently they cannot continue to use the older space shuttles because, as they age, it increases the chances that one could blow up again ... and they do not want that to happen!

Now that is what I call an incredibly expensive move! If it brought enjoyment to even one person, then it was worth every penny or billion!

@CoolPeace - Yes, it would have definitely been cheaper to leave the space shuttle where it was and let people visit it there!
