Bread Pudding Anyone?

United States

I love bread pudding. Where we are from many restaurants serve it. Down south not so many...none that we've found serve it. So, to satisfy my craving I have to make my own. This is only the second time I made it. I found a recipe on online and this time I amended it a little. I want more custard so I added an extra egg, I'll know later if that worked or not. For now I am just looking at it and drooling...looks good doesn't it? So, anyone for bread pudding? Photo is mine.

We can buy rice pudding or chocolate pudding but no bread pudding. Mine is probably better than store bought anyway.

Two small boxes of raisins I don't like a lot of fruit in it...maybe peaches would be good, or cherries.

@AbbyGreenhill Oh I see - looks good and nice to have a hint of extra sweetness from the fruits :)

@infatuatedbby There is a cup of sugar in there so it is sweet to begin with LOL...I think the fruit adds a touch of color too...or it would all be one shade.

You won't believe this, but this is 100% true. I have the same Corning Ware dish that you posted here and that's the one I use to make my bread pudding too. I do not put raisins in it though.

I think everyone around our age has the Corning ware - I have about a half dozen different pieces...I love them - I got most at yard sales. This one is the perfect size for bpudding.

@AbbyGreenhill It's a long time I do not make a bread pudding, it's too rich.

@LadyDuck It is also 'heavy'....on the tummy.

@jaboUK OK, no, I used 'normal' dark raisins. They plumped up pretty good in all that butter, milk and eggs LOL.

@AbbyGreenhill I think they are what you would call golden raisins. They are much plumper and sweeter than ordinary raisins.

@AbbyGreenhill .....Oh, that's good. My grandma used to make egg custard and I would gag some of it down. Guess I just don't care for custards although I do like pudding.

@celticeagle Funny - I like custard but not pudding. I make chocolate pudding for my husband and I gag just making it...yet I'm a chocolate lover...I think it's the texture.

Oh, I like bread puddin'!! I just make it like I do french toast, except crumble the bread and add raisins. Some times I add a glaze to it. When I worked at Old Country Buffet, I would often have this and put ice cream on it while it was still hot!!

It smelled so good hot, but I like mine cold, once it firms up. Can't wait to dive into it later.

The photo looks to me like an English Bread and Butter pudding, obviously Americans have a different name. If you buttered the bread first then that is a Bread and butter pudding as far as the Brits are concerned. Our Bread Pudding is broken up into little pieces of bread and looks more like a heavy cake and is brown all over when finished. Bread pudding is made with stale bread.

I mixed butter and milk together poured over bread chunks. Most bread pudding I"ve seen the top is just a little brown -it is also dry compared to the rest of it.

I have heard so many good things about rice pudding that I really want to find one that isn't like my moms. Here tasted like soggy bread. Is that the way it is supposed to taste???
