Duterte wanted to remove Algebra,Trigonometry and Calculus from the highschool curriculum and have it replaced with Business Math

Unless you want to be an engineer, Architect, rocket scientist or Professional Mathematician.... These branches of Math is kind of impractical in everyday life. I do remember my Math teacher saying these Branches of Math helps students learn problem solving in hard times. I do admit I hate these branches of Math because they make my highschool life a living hell because I really suck at Math but STEM (Science, Technology,Engineering and Mathematics) is really important to be encouraged to the Youth because the number of the Youth that takes STEM courses are decreasing. On the other hand these subjects causes stress, depression and anxiety to students who just can't be good in Math. I don't think it should be removed, I believe students who were really gifted in Math should study them while students who just can't be good at them can take business Math instead. Our country needs engineers because they have a high global demand. The President of the Philippines wanted them to be removed. I do agree with him though it stresses the hell out of students and make them hate school instead. I disagree that it should be removed because we need Scientists and Engineers.

I guess I am gifted in Math I excel in Math from Grade 5, 6 and high school (Math, Algebra, Geometry/Trigonometry and Physics). But in college it became a hell glad I had so many angels (my classmates and boardmates who were scholars of MAPUA).

I have a feeling you didnt pursue a Stem course because it became Hell in college.. I actually never been in college because I am afraid of Math. I think kids who were good at them should have the option to take them so we will still have scientists and engineers.

@CaptAlbertWhisker I need a terror teacher to excel in any subject I took up BS Accountancy at the Lyceum of the Philippines but transferred to PATTS College of Aeronautics and took up Airline Secretarial course and worked as a secretary in general aviation.

@AkoPinay When I was a Little boy I wanted to pursue a STEM course but when I reached highschool, Math and science became jerks. I originally wanted to be an Astronaut or a computer programmer but they were just Math heavy.

I wasn't great at math either (although I excelled in arithmetic ). But I could do well with certain sciences (that didn't require math). But honestly, if I didn't go through the hell I went through in school, I wouldn't have known what I was truly good or terrible at - at least I was given the chance to find out. So I agree with you that it shouldn't be taken out. Perhaps the higher level math should be given to those who excel at it . . . while the others have the option of taking something like business math. Having too much stress is one thing . . . but not be challenged enough is another. Perhaps there needs to be training so teachers can teach these subjects better . . . sometimes it takes a great teacher to keep students motivated to learn - especially with math. Some of the math teachers that I had made me fall asleep!

@CaptAlbertWhisker I have read that about Finland . . . I know a lot of people (including me) who would just love to move there! They are crazy ridiculous about homework here . . . it's really too much and too stressful on the kids here - and the parents who have to deal with it!!

@much2say Without Homeworks, kids can actually enjoy being kids and they can also review and do a homestudy after school without being stressed.

I think the educational system of forcing homework to kids while they have to review is the reason why many kids suck at Math. Finland got rid of homework and their kids performed the best around the world.

I hated those subjects so much when I was studying. I never even used them in my job and even in my every day life.

@CaptAlbertWhisker I don't think so. Those subjects will be taken by Engineering students anyway but those who are not interested with Engineering need them not. In Canada, a friend there told me those subjects are not taught to students either.

We might end up having less engineers and scientist if those maths were removed.

@salonga In the US I believe you choose your subjects so You can avoid the complicated Maths if you like.

I guess it would be wrong to use business math directly.. not all courses are meaant for business math.

Algebra and calculus are also useless in real life but it is meant to make people more disciplined.

You would think it would be left for the students who want to take that course.

I hate Math but I know there should be more students who should pursue STEM courses.

It makes sense...the math that i use now is what i learnt in Accounts when i reached in 11th grade...a lot of the other theories have no significance in my daily life.
