Do You Speak More Than One Language Fluently?

I would love to learn to speak another language fluently. I know quite a bit of Spanish, but not enough to say that I speak it fluently. I’m constantly learning new vocabulary words, but there are so many. And I get confused on the sentence structure also. I learned some Japanese when I lived in Okinawa for 18 months, but I’ve forgotten a lot of it for lack of use. I have no one to speak to in Japanese, so I have forgotten most of what I learned there. I have also learned bits and pieces, mostly greetings and how to say “thank you” and “you’re welcome” in several other languages. There are so many languages spoken in the world today. It’s truly amazing.

Just English. If I were young, I would make every effort to learn Spanish as it is a vital skill to have in the California workplace.

Yes, I would like to learn Spanish, in particular. We have many Spanish speaking persons living in our area. Even though I'm not young anymore, I would still like to take a class in Spanish, if I could find one that would teach me quickly.

I don't even speak one language fluently. I've learnt Sanskrit, Marathi, Hindi(all these are language of India) and English. No language is known by me by depth. I guess..knowing in detail maybe is even difficult.

I think it would be wonderful to understand another language well. Your English is good, it seems to me.

@RitzzView Yes, I wrote a post about that concerning the English language. There are over a quarter of a million words in the English language. I don't think that there is anyone who knows them all. I've written a few posts recently about expanding your vocabulary. There are many words that I've never even heard before, so when I come across a word that I don't know and that happens fairly often, because I read a LOT, I take the time to make a note of the word and find out the meaning of it. I also have a "Build a Better Vocabulary" game that I use to learn new words. In English. In Spanish, I'm just learning some of the more common words that I would need to carry on a simple conversation or to order certain foods in a restaurant. I'm still working on that, but we go to Mexican restaurants quite often. The servers all speak English but it's still FUN to "try" to speak their language and they appreciate the effort.

@RasmaSandra Wonderful! I'm glad to know that you understood what I wrote. I'm trying to learn "bits and pieces" like you, of a lot of different languages. I think it's FUN.

Sadly, no. I know enough French to get around in France, but I'm most in conversation with anyone over 4-years-old. Given that I live in California, I wish I knew more Spanish.

I wish I knew more Spanish also. I have several books that I should be using to learn more Spanish but I keep putting it off. I have learned some but not enough to get around that well in a Spanish speaking environment. I spent a week in Spain and I have been to Mexico several times, staying in some very nice resorts. But, the employees all speak English, and so do a lot of the shop owners and restaurant workers, so there is no challenge.

@TheHorse Yes, that's true here also. But there are a few new servers now and then, that don't understand English very well. I think they have newly arrived to this area and they can find work in Mexican restaurants fairly easy.

@IreneVincent At some of the Mexican restaurants I go to here, they seem to prefer that we speak English.
