Organizing Options

# 43 Whenever I do any cleaning up or organizing at home, I ask myself which of these five options is an item falls into: 1. Trash it 2. Use it 3. Sell it 4. Keep it 5. Donate it Any broken or unusable items should go to trash immediately. That would be the case if it were up to me. But my husband often has other ideas. He thinks they can be useful again somehow – either they can be fixed or used, even partly, as something else... Any good and functioning items should be put to use. If they just lay around for years and years without much use, then perhaps it’s time to consider them to fall into the other options instead of using up storage space... Items that are no use to me but still in good condition may be useful to others. This is when selling them can be an option. And if no one wants to buy, giving them away is always a good option… Lastly, items which are no longer of use to me but have sentimental values will probably end up in my ‘Keep’ option. I used to be more of a hoarder in my younger days. But I’m getting better in throwing, selling, or giving away things I don’t use instead of keeping them... Image credit: Pixabay

I just trash most things I am not using any more, even if they still have value - there are many people that sit at the dumps daily looking for treasures

That's cool - in a way you are giving them away too...

I would trash plenty of things, but my husband would get them back pretending that we need them. We have the house full of unused stuff.

@LadyDuck That is how my husband too... The day he decides to clean up his stuff (which does happen every now and then) is always the time I feel so much lighter...

@LadyDuck Good idea! They do need a lot of encouragement to part with their junk - oops, I meant stuff...

@sishy7 He cleaned up last July and he threw plenty of old magazines and papers. I am trying to push him to do this again before Christmas.

I recently went through my stuff to make space; I feel I need to do that with my clothes at some point. Get rid of some jeans that will probably never fit me again lol.

@infatuatedbby You need to, especially if you like shopping... You need the space for new stuff you're buying...

This is a good way to organise stuff. I am trying to declutter so use all these ideas. I don't hoard nearly as much as I used to so I'm gradually getting the place tidier.

Yes, I'm constantly trying to get rid of clutters. It was a huge relief when I finally went through bags and boxes worth at least 10 years of documents recently... I feel a lot lighter, but I need to stay on top of it as they can so easily piling up real fast again if I'm not watchful...

@JudyEv I still have to go through a suitcase full of my kids school work... I used to keep everything, but now I'm learning to throw stuff out and just keep important documents or records.

@sishy7 It seems to be the paperwork that accumulates the most. And I have lots of books but I'm gradually working on getting rid of some of them. And I go through the filing cabinet periodically and throw out dated stuff.

Yes, it's not always an easy or available option... It can be done through garage sales or eBay listing - those are the ways I've done it before...

In fact I like to throw out unnecessary things like your first catergory. When there are less items, then the house will look clean and in a good order I don't like to keep things that are not useful.

I think I'm more like your husband . Hubby would love to trash more stuff here - but I'm the one who's always saying we can still use it - and hey, we CAN still use it . But I need to do a big overhaul . . . I do want to get rid of stuff, but not necessarily trash them as they can still be used like I said - someone else sure can use it!

The problem is sometime that 'can still be used' would take a looong... time so they keep taking up spaces in the meantime...

Those things that i consider can still be used by simply doing some things to make it look somehow new , would ultimately end up in a trash can because i know , it will remain there in a corner again .

Yes, something that we don't immediately or regularly use tend to just sit for years and years... Unless it is something of a sentimental value, then it is probably better to get rid of it one way or another...

also I often suggest considering how long it's been since you used the item, that helps determine the keep or move on options sometimes

Yes, that is a great suggestion... Of course it would depend on each item to determine how long is too long or not before it is decided to be kept or removed.

Most of my extra stuff is old papers, old exams...papers that need to be tossed. Wish I had a fireplace here--I'd never need kindling.

My goal for this winter is to organize my closet. Your suggestions are great and I'll probably have to decide what to keep, what to toss and what can be donated. I'm tired of hanging on to shoes and clothes I'll probably never wear again
