Where are you going? To the palengke (wet market) to buy vinegar, sugar and red bell pepper. But we have a lot of vinegar. How much do you need? Two glasses. (Gets the 1.8 liter jug (half-filled) and the unopened one liter pack from the kitchen) Oh. But we also need segunda (medium brown) sugar. (Gets the tall plastic container with 3/4 kilo of segunda sugar and the unopened half-kilo pack of white sugar. Okay, I will use up the segunda sugar, so just bell pepper. I'll go. We also don't have siling pangsigang (long green chili). And eggs. And ampalaya (bittermelon). Please list them all down. All those items were visible and located right where they usually are, so I don't understand why she didn't see them. Do you have the patience to search, or do you just go out and buy immediately? When you come home from the store and someone showed you the items you were looking for, do you use them first, or the new one you bought?

I write down things we need as I think of them then, when we go shopping, I mostly have a list already compiled.

I am very patient in marketing, I'd search and search till I find what I need. And I always just reserve the newly bought for next use if the same items were found in the house.

you know what i'm not patient about when going to the market? haggling and comparing prices! if it's there, it looks good, and within my budget, i buy it so i can go home sooner. haha!

@salonga on the way there, i buy fruits and veggies from the sidewalks and stalls that i pass, so that all i need to buy when i'm inside are the fish, chicken and pork.

I used to be so much better about grocery lists - but now I do go shopping with just my head. In most cases, I do know what we have . . . but on occasion I'm just not sure if we have something . . . so I just might buy it anyway (since I could use it later anyway). If it is something that will expire, I will definitely use the older or used one first.

that's what she always says, that it's not going to spoil, but she also forgets about them so i have to do routine checks, especially if it's something i didn't buy and still not being used..

@hereandthere There have been times that I've forgotten how much we had of something . . . I'd end up with 3 bags or cans of whatever that had already been sitting in the pantry . But produce will spoil and having to much of it can be a waste too.

@much2say what annoys me more is when she buys something new to try it out and didn't like it, or experimented and same result, she won't touch it anymore.

When I go to the public market, I usually have the things I need listed beforehand or just in my mind. I always look for the best produce rather than stick to one stall for all the ingredients.

i always have a list in my phone and refer to it. i don't believe in "suki" either. i also buy from those with pushcarts to save a trip to the market. but just like in the wet market, i only buy what i like and the amount that i need, even if it's just 2 bunches of kangkong or chunk of squash.

@Dextoi i don't like it when they pressure me to buy more, or take advantage of my mother. pechay is a family favorite, too.

@hereandthere that's good... It's just right to choose the food that we have to eat. So, you are fond of water spinach? We love to eat those too :)

I always look at the pantry whenever I planned to buy groceries. And list those items on my shopping list. I have the tendency to buy items that are not on my list though. hahaha

in the supermarket, yes. i keep putting stuff in the cart, then end up paying for just 80 to 90% of the content at the cashier, and telling myself i'll just buy them next time.

@rachz_kisses you get all these ideas from all those items available, but realize your money can only go so far. but it was fun fantasizing.

@hereandthere hahaha it's like a therapy or something that you feel good seeing a lot of items in the supermarket. Oh, maybe it's just me.

Do you have the patience to search, or do you just go out and buy immediately? - Yes, I do have the patience to search. When you come home from the store and someone showed you the items you were looking for, do you use them first, or the new one you bought? - I use the items that were previously bought. This was how I was raised by my mother and I continue to do so up to this day.

Sometime i also buy something not knowing i still have them in the big container where i put those groceries . And when that happens i used first the old one of course , specially when it comes to produce .

@hereandthere With my mother-in-law and the oldies left on weekdays , there are some left over veggies that always rot . I told her never to leave veggies on the ref when they buy . A veggie should be all cooked in one cooking because usually the left over would be returned to the ref and stay there to rot .

i've done that, too, though rarely since i always have a running list on my phone that i add and delete items, but i still follow first-in, first-out. sometimes, i just dump all the limp veggies into a pot and make soup.

Sometimes I end up buying stuff that turns out we already have in our pantry or fridge. So I will use the old stock and replace the newly bought ones. That way, I know that we will not end up having expired or bad items.

because there's only two of you now. here it's okay not to stock up because it's also easy to buy stuff. just walking distance around the neighborhood.

i bought a small box of grape seed extract to try it out, but forgot about them. i accidentally saw them recently, but saw that they are several months past the expiration date. good thing it's only a small box, so i didn't cost me much.

i seem to be the only one here who has the patience to search and the discipline to follow FIFO. i want to avoid duplicates, especially if it's a slow moving item.

yes, it takes trial and error to know which food will trigger your gout or not, but i'm glad you're actively tackling this issue. i'd like to buy more leafy veggies, but they wilt easily.

i make a list fer the hubs (sadly i cannot hold out to go grocery shoppin') 'n he's prone to not followin' 't. he ne'er looks'n a cabinet nor the fridge/freezer. jest purchases'n whim...which means most oft he gets what he wishes 'n fergets what i need. he'll also not pull out the ol' schtuff 'n put the new 'hind. drives me crazy, but that's life right now.
