Living in interesting times

I believe that ‘May you live in interesting times’ is an old curse. I feel incredibly lucky that so far in my lifetime I have not experienced any war (nor famine or pestilence!); I have had a peaceful, comfortable life with good opportunities, an increasingly cosmopolitan lifestyle and a standard of living that has risen continually. Now it feels that that era is drawing to a close. In history we look at great civilisations and wonder what brought them down. We wonder how peaceful countries broke up and destroyed themselves in wars, and how despotic tyrants actually got into power in the first place. Are we just about to find out first hand? I don't have any suitably depressing photos so let's have some cheerful autumn colours instead. All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2016.

Well, until yesterday's election here, I was a happy camper, so to speak!

I think there are many waiting in trepidation to see what happens next.

I think I'm going to emigrate. To Mars.

Better stay down here. Out there you would most likely be completely at the mercy of the Americans or the Russians.

@Fleura It would take them quite a while to get there though!

@Fleura how fortunate, i'd so love to see 'em! here 'tis been too dry 'n the temps iffy 't best. 80's one day, 60's the next. winds've been high 's well, rippin' those that're startin' to turn straight off the branches.

The colours here have been very good this year as it's been relatively dry - often heavy rain sogs all the leaves turning them brown and mushy.

To paraphrase Mark Twain, rumours of the world's demise have been greatly exaggerated. Much of Trump's campaign rhetoric will be tempered by wiser heads during his Presidency. No need to start building that bunker just yet!

I really hope so! I hope his campaign promises do turn out to be lies, as usual.

@Fleura Well there you go. I think you may have hit the nail on the head. All politicians lie to gain office then go back on their promises once they've achieved it. Here's hoping eh?

The rise and fall of a country depends on whether or not it enjoys the ardent support of the people.Don't worry about it,everything will work out well.

There's always wars and hunger in the world .. it's just that some of us are not directly affected ...

No, we have been very lucky, I don't believe we can keep being that lucky for ever!

Those leaves, in all their majestic colors lightened or even brightened the thoughts I had while reading your post, my dear. I was not born during the war in the Philippines (thanks God)! But I knew how it was. Mama had a good memory of it. Every time she told us of a scenario & she cried, we cried with her. Now, it seems another war is to come to our country. I pray for our people.

It seems that any generation that can avoid war is doing unusually well.

Those are some beautiful leaves. As for Trump ... well, let's hope he's all bark and no bite.
