I've been playing EQ for many years, I don't think it is a bunch of junk. Now if compared to WOW, the graphics may not be so fancy and all, but there is a ton more content than WOW could even imagine. And since its been around for quite some time, the players tend to be older and more mature than that of your average WOW player.
The social interaction is much better in EQ than in WOW, and I have played both so I can base my judgement upon that.

My youngest brother introduced me to EverQuest the end of January '07 and from day one I was hooked. It took over my life literally...I'd get up in the morning, take a shower, have a bowl of cereal and start playing...the next thing I'd know it would be getting dark outside and it was 5 or 6 at night...the whole day was gone. Everytime I tried to get away from it...I couldn't stop thinking about it. Even now while I'm typing this it whispers in my head about how much fun I could be having playing. Don't get me wrong...I love EverQuest. Its exciting to create a toon and go thru the quests...killin' things and lootin'...but the one thing that is missing for me is a goal. I don't mean reaching the next level or finishing the next quest but a real honest to goodness ending.
I also have issues with spending $180.00 a year to play a game...and thats without the multiple expansions. I have the game loaded on my pc and paid up till the 3rd of next month but to be honest I fight myself everytime I think of playing...I'm scared of getting hooked back in. I have been EQ free since the 23rd of April and it feels good even if I do miss it sometimes.
I have 2 younger brothers that play...they both fall under the "addicted" title and stay up all night playing, play just about every free moment they have and they love it.
It is a constant battle with yourself not to get too hooked in it.

EverQuest was the first game that I allowed myself to fall in love with. There's such a huge world to explore and thousands upon thousands of people to meet and quests to embark on. I played religiously for a few years before moving on to greener pastures. Now there's a seuqel, EverQuest II, which, in my opinion, is a weaker, watered-down version of its predecessor. Right now, I'm trying to get motivated to play Sony's newest game, Vanguard, but haven't had the time.
