Timeless

That's the name of a new TV show, but that's not what this post is about. To give you more of an idea of what I'm talking about, Timeless (on NBC) is a show where three people (a pilot, an ex soldier, and a history expert) are sent back in time when a man who is seemingly a villain steals the brand new time machine. These three use a back up prototype to follow the man to wherever his time machine goes (sounds corny, but it's not). I guess some tracking monitor tells them what part of history the villains are going to. Which is where my question comes up. One of the places they went back time was the night of Abraham Lincoln's assassination. While the history expert warns the danger of changing history (every action or change of action has a trickle down effect), she still tries to save Abraham Lincoln from getting shot. She doesn't succeed. Yet when they are sent back to the tragedy of the Hindenburg disaster they do change part of the outcome and when they return to the future the interference has changed the present life of the history expert. She has to return to her life, even though it's changed. I looked up some of the characters they put in each episode and get really interested because they use people that really lived and affected the past. Like one of JFK's mistresses is in an episode, and I had never heard of her. I looked it up and she was indeed a real person. I guess I've gone into a bit more than I intended. My main question is what part of history would you go back to? Some things you just couldn't change because of the scope of the problem. I don't believe you could go back in time and change the course of slavery because slavery didn't even originate here, plus not one particular thing caused it; many things had to be factored in. Going back to 9/11 would be my choice. Knowing what we know now going back in time and warning of the particular flights the terrorists were on would save thousands of people. You might say hey, maybe they wouldn't believe you. I remember back that far and they certainly would have grounded those flights and searched everywhere. People take bomb threats extremely seriously. But we can't go change it. However, I'd like to know when you'd go back in time, not because you want to see what the era was like, but to change or influence an event. Where would you go and what would you try to change? Preferably something in the grand scheme, not like going back and refusing to drive on a day you know you had a car accident.

We have to leave shortly and I haven't got time to think of something too grand but maybe I'd switch the roles of Adam and Eve and make Adam the temptor. lol

Very interesting question. The trouble his that history tends to repeat itself... Nazi Germany wasn't the first or last mass genocide.. the same thing is happening right now in parts of Africa. Slavery still exists today, only now it's known as human trafficking. Humans don't learn from their mistakes... So if we opted to go back and stop Hitler from having power, thus eliminating the deaths of thousands of people, and possibly avoiding WW2... well, someone worse may have stepped in and done the same thing, but perhaps on an even larger scale... I don't think I'd tried to change the past... unless I could figure out a way to change human evolution and prevent us from becoming such horrible creatures that kill each other and everything else on this planet!

I appreciate your response! And I'm glad you realize I'm aware we can't go back in time. Feels like some are missing that point.

Interesting thoughts here and Yes, I have seen some of the episodes and it is an interesting show. But if you ask me what part in time I would Love to go back too. Since I have relatives who helped place the first spike in the railroad to get them running this would be an interesting time, or maybe when the Pilgrims were the first ones being able to plant things and interact with the indians.

I wouldn't change anything, as there is always something worse that could have happened. When I read your article my first thought was 9/11, but they might have had a different impression, if they heard it would happen by putting you in jail. Your right people do take things serious that people say and many avoid saying anything that could mean trouble. I have watched several episodes of Timeless and stopped watching, as think we shouldn't try changing what has happened instead change our future life and make it better. This might mean eating better, less stress, talking to others or more sleep.

We cannot change the events because a little thing that we change in the past could change things that we do not expect. If you want to read a great book about someone who wanted to change the past read 11/22/63 by Stephen King.

That was the point the history expert made repeatedly in the show. I'm not into time travel, but I like the show. It's fun.

Every show or book on time travel constantly reminds you that changing the past can have a huge impact on the present/future. Look at Back to the Future.

Sounds a good show, its so happen NBC is not in the list of channels in our cable, so we cannot watch Timeless.
