How Do You Like House? Upside Down or Right Side Up?

new house

Just watched a televised viewing of some beautiful new homes built in one of those planned communities in Round Rock, Texas. One house was called the “upside down house”. ~ The kitchen and living areas are on the top floor. ~ The bedrooms are on the bottom level. The kitchen is upstairs?? The kitchen where most of the trash in everybody's house is accumulated. The kitchen is upstairs? Right! Because we all enjoy carrying the messy food garbage down a flight of stairs. Who is the genius architect floor planner that thought of that??!!

maybe they put a garbage shoot in and can just drop it down to the trash can in the garage? Personally I'd be more worried about hauling those groceries upstairs, I guess if they also had a "dumb" waiter to get it there...

@cmoneyspinner I've gotten to where I'd never buy a 2 story house. I live in a 1 story ranch in North Austin and after a remodel in 1999, it is handicapped accessible so I can age in place. Since I'm retired and my wife works from home we don't get out much either.

@ElicBxn - Your house is perfect for you. We (my husband and I) still live with our adult children. They are the ones paying the rent and as they adults they do want their privacy. They usually opt for houses or apartments with 2 levels. Before we moved to these apartments we lived in a 2 story house in Cedar Park. They were more than happy to let my husband and me have the bedroom on the lower level while they stayed on the upper level in their rooms. However in these apartment, it has 3 levels. Someone lives in a separate apartment on the lower level. Our 2-level apartment is above theirs. It was the best accomodation we could find for the number of people who live here with a rental price that my sons could afford. Sure! I would like for things to be different. Nevertheless, I'm thankful to God for having a roof over our heads. I see a lot of homeless people. I just realized that we both live in Austin. Cool!!

Since I live in apartments and have to climb stairs to haul groceries up and carry trash bags down the stairs, I don't know why anybody would want to buy their house built that way. It's a hassle. I view walking up and down the stairs at the apartment as me getting exercise because I work from home and don't get out much. But I would never buy a house intentionally designed this way!

Maybe they compost the trash or something. It isn't something that would worry me. There might be better views from the top.

If there are better views from the top I'd like to see them from my bedroom. But that's just me. I visited one model home and the view from the bedroom was fabulous!

@JudyEv - Hey! People are buying the homes. Somebody must like the layout. Bottom line for me? Would that every home ever designed also came with a maid!

@cmoneyspinner I think here multiple storied houses are just designed for the best views. My friend's has bedrooms on the ground floor.

Long time ago, some houses used to have kitchens on the outside, not even attached to the home. But when the kitchen became a part of the home that was welcomed by everyone. Putting the kitchen upstairs? I just don't get it!

I rather like the idea of laundry being on the same floor as the bedrooms, but I don't think I could put up with a house that had the kitchen upstairs... unless it was possibly built on a hill, and the upstairs was really at ground level. I suppose if there were a trash chute it would possibly be okay... maybe... but then there's the matter of cleaning it out if you don't bag everything up beforehand, and I have it on good authority that hauling giant refrigerators up flights of stairs really, really sucks for the delivery guys. Nope, definitely not my cup of tea.

Yeah I only thought about the trash. But you're right. Hauling the appliances up the stairs is hard too! Per my sons. We moved into an apartment and we are on the upper level. It was a difficult move but we made it!

@cmoneyspinner Who would want a kitchen upstairs. For me Kitchens have always been on the main floor. This house does not do anything for me.
