I was honoured to witness something beautiful today. Not in a physical sense, but in a way that made Brexit and Trump, and all the ill-feelings in the world, seem ever-so distant and ridiculous.
Four sixteen year old girls. Two {twin sisters} from India, one from Poland, and the fourth from China. None born in this country, none living here for more than a few years.
They sat together in a lesson, enjoying a natter. Their conversation turned to language, and they showed interest and delight in being able to share their language and teach each other a few written words. I should have been encouraging them to do their work, but I was loving listening to their discussion. It gave me a warm fuzzy glow inside. Life is about different nationalities and cultures coming together and learning from each other ... it's the sort of education that doesn't come from a textbook. It comes from shared experiences.
It's just a shame that the rest of the class couldn't have cared less. If that says anything about the English, then it's possible that as a country we truly are all doomed.
*sigh*
