3 Million Discussions?

Rather more than 10 years ago (in April 2006), MyLot opened its doors for the first time and began paying members for posting discussions, responses and comments. Since then, the members have, between them, posted three million discussions, 18 million responses and getting on for 27 million comments. A little simple maths shows that, on average, each discussion has received 6 responses and about 9 comments As a matter of fact, the current average (over the last year or so) is more like 8 responses and 14 comments per discussion. I really wouldn't like to estimate the number of words that have been typed! What a lot of real life stories, anguish and joy has been expressed here, though!

If you add up the number of discussions on similar sites and discussion forums all over the word there must be billions and billions of discussions floating around in the ether. It goes to show one thing. We humans love to communicate!!

That's very true! How different it is, though, from the average bus or railway carriage where regular travellers know each other to probably about the same extent that we know each other on here! Nobody here is buried in their newspaper or staring vacantly out of the window, avoiding even eye contact with their fellow travellers!

I just love being part of the site since 2012 although I have only contributed 0.0077% of the total discussions - I need to do a lot better than that!

@JudyEv It's not that impressive - I used a calculator...

@sishy7 But what did you divide into what? I guess your total number of posts, comments and responses into the two million? Is that it? No need to reply. I'm getting a headache. I'm going to lie down. It's all too much.

I'm below average with regard to the number of discussions but above average for the number of responses per discussion, I think (though I haven't checked my stats for a while).

That is a lot of interaction, isn't it? I've only been here a bit over 12 months but every morning I look forward to finding out what people are up to.

I haven't added much to the discussion total but a fair bit to the response/comment tally Must admit though...with sites going down every so often I do have a worry that some day mylot will go too Hopefully it will be ok and the money they make is enough to make it worth their while carrying on.

It's almost inevitable that sites like this will have their day. I'm confident, however, that the owners have a robust earnings algorithm which means that they will keep paying as long as they can.

@owlwings from my point it isn't the money it's the social aspect. When old mylot stopped paying I stayed for a while but it became a ghost site (with regards to the friends I used to have and speak to every day) except for you, jj and dawn from what I remember. Then it became a spamfest so I just stopped coming here. If it stopped paying again I'd still come on here as long as there were decent discussions...but I suppose if the money aspect goes a lot of members will disappear (as on tiny cent) and look for new money sites

Considering all things and how much hot air, differences of opinion and bad blood there is online, MyLot is a remarkably friendly and good site to be a member of.

That's a milestone! I am also an old Mylotter here. I started to be active here again since October last year.

That is amazing ! I rarely look at any of the numbers, but it's pretty cool when someone does the math (especially since I am not good at it ) and pumps out these statistics. That would amount to A LOT of words - and more are added each second. Can you imagine how the numbers will stack up in another decade?

It's about this point that my head begins to spin! I can do the math but the numbers begin to lose any meaning!

@owlwings We have built our foundation of words and friendship here - and as long as the numbers continue upward, it just means we are that strong of a community!

To my shame,I haven't made that many contributions to the number of 3 Million, though I have been here since 2010.

I think that I'm well under the average per user, too, but that statistic is rather difficult to check. The number of responses I've received per discussion, though, is above the average!

I could guess (but it would be very ball-park) at an average of maybe 100 words per discussion, 50 words per response and 25 words per comment. That's just a feeling I have and not based on any research or actual statistics. Based on that, it will be around two thousand million words typed! That is about the same number of words as 60,000 copies of the King James Bible.

@Jessicalynnt Sadly, mostly hot air, evanescent and of no account but I know that there are some real gems in there!
