Last week as I was preparing to take our adopted cat for spaying, I noticed a very light scratch on my hand; it was a little reddish but no blood. I washed it immediately with soap and water, then flooded it with alcohol, thinking the cat could had scratched it. I told my husband about it, and asked if I was sure the cat made it, and I said I was not sure because I had done other things in the garden after I handled the cat. So I waited for some days, worrying about the scratch. Then finally yesterday, we went to the clinic to get the first dosage consisting of one shot each on my upper arm. The nurse said I should get four dosages, and she scheduled the dates. So I still have three, but am thinking I can have only two or three dosages. Are you also worried about such things, of contacting rabies if you are not so sure about that you had it? Anyway it is better be safe than sorry!

Not really, I think cat scratch fever is probably the worst thing that could have happened.

They say cat scratch can also be dangerous because cats tend to lick its feet, so the transfer of rabies from its saliva is most likely.

@acelawrites rabies is pretty rare around here especially in domestic animals.

When you are not sure about the scratch, it is very good to take precautions whether it gives some pain

You did the right thing but please follow the advice to get 4 dosages. My husband got just a slight scratch from the teeth of our doggie but we went to the doctor for injection immediately. Indeed it is better to be safe than sorry.

Why do you those shots , when it was just a minor scratch and you have already washed it with soap and water immediately when you noticed it ? Those anti-rabies shots must be so painful .

Yes, very painful indeed. But to be sure, I had the shots because the cat was a stray one. Though the scratch did not produce a wound.

I also think it was a wise thing to do. I get scratches all the time from my two dogs but they have had their rabies shot so I don't need to worry.

Yes, I was worried because the cat did not have anti-rabies shots; it is a stray cat.

I remember getting scratch before but never thought of anti rabies shots. Unless it's from the dog.

We don't have rabies in Australia but most people who work with animals get an extra tetanus shot from time to time. Most kids are immunised against tetanus as youngsters but adults need a booster from time to time.
