A Best Buy?

How many times have you walked through a store and noticed something marked as a best buy? How many times have you bought something because it was marked a best buy? Have you ever wondered why it is marked a best buy?
Here is one of things you need to watch out for. Who is considering it a best buy? If Consumer Reports list it has a best buy you can be pretty sure it is a best buy. If Consumers Digest listed it as a best buy, that is an entirely different story.
So what’s the difference? Consumer Reports puts the products through rigorous testing. They test and test the product.
Consumers Digest relies on the buyer not to notice it is Consumers Digest and not Consumer Reports. The article I read about Consumers Digest says they award their best buy on items the company that makes the items pays the magazine to give the award to. One article went as far as to say, in many cases, no one from Consumers Digest even sees the item they are awarding as a best buy.
The bottom line is if a company is tooting their horn that something is a best buy, make sure it is a Consumer Reports best buy and not a Consumers Digest best buy.
Have you ever bought something because it was marked a best buy?

I pretty much ignore all that and do the research on (major) things before I purchase it. There are too many labels that say they are this or that . . . can't always tell if it's really something to be considered. Just like when a hard candy is labeled "fat free" - well no duh that it's fat free, it's not a healthier choice, and it's not a reason for me to buy it. There are some places here that say they have been voted best whatever by a particular local magazine - but so what - was it voted by the small magazine staff, or the small amount of folks who actually read that magazine. I can put a label on my forehead and say I'm the best mom in this household
. I'm sure I've seen those best buy marks before . . . but now I'll have to look at them a little closer!

@RichardMeister Well does the washer work well enough for you anyway? If it does, then it was certainly a best buy for you.

@much2say I've had the repairman out a couple of time but it turned out the problem both times was apparently my fault. The first time there was smoke coming out the door. The concluded I didn't have all the clothes out of the way of the door when I closed it and that caused it to smoke. The second time they concluded I had put in too much soap.

When I went to Sears to buy my washing machine and dryer a few years ago I looked at everything they had. I was looking at basically 2 things–price (I was paying cash) and size. I didn't need one of those giant ones but I didn't want one that was too small. I settled on one and asked the salesman how much it could hold. He said, "You can wash a queen size comforter in that machine." That was the size I was looking for and the price was within my budget. Then he said, "That one is a Consumer _________ (I can't remember if he said Reports or Digest) best buy. So I walked out of the store thinking 3 things–I got the washer I wanted, it's made by Whirlpool, and I got a best buy. Well I found out Whirlpool not longer makes Kenmore (LG makes them) and that I may not have gotten the best buy that I thought I got. But the washer is the size I needed.

I dont go with the tagline about the product, its totaly depending on the need and brand of the product which matters to me more then the label :)

I probably have in my less cynical days, but I am pretty careful now about verifying best buys.
