Well, It Was Confirmed

I hadn't been at church long this morning when the president of the council approached me to tell me that they were no longer going to pay me to clean. I told him that I figured so much when I seen it under new business on the agenda.
I approached my friend...or at least I thought she was my friend....and told her that I found out why she was hem hawing around about telling me what went on at the council meeting. She pretty much laid in to me saying it wasn't her place to tell me. I told her that I didn't see why not, especially since I am a council meeting. Then I felt like she was laying into me again saying that I missed the meeting so that was my fault.
Here I thought she was on "my side" on changing the day of council meeting so that I can attend again.
The other guy then was talking about turning off all the lights to make a point to the congregation that enough money is not coming in to even pay the utility bills. Well, you can't squeeze blood from a turnip as the saying goes.
One man stated that he can start giving a little more than he is now.
There are just too many of the few members that are left that just have it in their minds that within the next year the church will close. They have closed their minds to anything else.
It doesn't have to be that way. We do have to have fundraisers that involve the public!! So many are against the fundraisers....why, I don't know. Well, I guess it's because with so few members it's only a few members that are willing to even help with fundraisers.
We are having a big Christmas fundraiser starting on Black Friday. Actually, there is a lot more people stepping up to help than there has been. This is to be the last one as they plan on selling the stuff for little of nothing on the last day to try to get rid of it.
I still plan on doing a rummage sale in the summer.
The other thing we need to do is have an annual dinner of some sort like we used to do. It can be simple like a spaghetti dinner. I am going to talk to a few people to see if they would be in for doing it.
You know, everything has to be council approved and some of those people set that the church will close, are on the council.
Sigh...yes, as you can tell, this is still weighing very heavy on me.

Sigh indeed. It must be hard to think about the changes that could come. If the congregation wants to stay together then I hope it happens.

Oh my..there are some others like me that have thought about changing churches over controversy with some members, but have stayed out of obligation because of the shrinking congregation. Plus, my grandpa and my uncles helped build the church many many many years ago. Grandpa's been gone 36 years and it was many years before that it was built there.

Is it that the direction of the church has changed?

@marsha32 It is a pity. Yet, if you need to work for money, noone can make you work with no pay.

I have no idea how to get new members. We invite people all the time. There is no draw for the younger crowd because the older members want nothing to do with the more modern music. Plus we don't have things like a gym or youth room etc that draws in the teens.

@marsha32 how sad :( i reckon folks've been so glamorized by the big 'n fancy churches they're most interested'n what can be offered to 'em, verses the other side'f the coin. saddens my heart, hon.

You have some great ideas and they could turn things around if they made an effort to do so. If they are not even going to try then they will have no choice but it let it close. That is so sad.

There are times when doors close, not the doors to the church, in this case, but the doors of opportunity. Many old fashioned people feel that fundraisers at church are like the money changers in the Bible and object for those reasons. Good luck on your efforts but sometimes what we want is not part of what God wants. It would make me sad too, though just like it is making you sad.

Over the years I've thought about changing churches for different reasons. I've stayed somewhat out of obligation, but I also had stayed as church felt just as much at home as my own house and most of the time even more so.

I'm sorry, our congregation is also having financial troubles too, and they have made some changes like on Wednesday instead of meeting in the sanctuary, we are meeting in the front room which is smaller and takes less power to heat.

I am so sorry to hear this, maybe you can think of something to help bring in the funds needed.
