Ditching the Sleigh!

Santa ditched his sleigh this year and has apparently magicked a popular model truck to full size just so he can arrive on time at a local garden centre, where he is holding court at weekends until Christmas. When he arrived at his destination, he greeted all the people who had come to see him and then slowly realized that it was more likely the truck they had come to see! Nevertheless, forty-eight little wonders visited him afterwards in his grotto, whispered their secret desires to him and went joyfully away with a fine gift for each one. Not one of them will get a piece of coal, I'm sure, though one or two of the parents might! I always enjoy this time of year. We see an amazing variety of kids of all ages from 4 days old (attending with her 18 month old brother, who clearly wasn't quite certain about having a baby sister yet) to, believe it or not, a 16 or 17 year old Swedish girl who has come every year with her sisters for the last 6 years, just to keep the magic alive! You may not agree with perpetuating the myth of Father Christmas (or Santa Claus, as some people call him) but, for me, it is far more than dressing up and play-acting. Each child is an individual with hopes and fears and heartfelt desires and, for the moment anyway, Father Christmas gives his full attention to them. Later on, perhaps, they will come to understand the special role that fiction plays in the drama of real life.

I do enjoy it and I have had a number of compliments on how well I play the part.

The truck surely is impressive. How sweet to dress like Santa and listen to all those little kids. We celebrate Santa Claus (Saint Nicholas) the 6th of December here in Switzerland. The kids are going to receive their first gifts of the season.

Since we renounced the Catholic Church and made our own, saints have not been very important in England. We have St George, of course, as the Patron Saint but nobody knows much about him (and he certainly wasn't British!). Father Christmas was originally quite distinct from St Nicholas and he's not really terribly old, as these things go. He only really appeared in the 17th Century, though there were personifications of Christmas for a good two centuries before that and it's possible that, originally, there was a Northern European god who probably had similar characteristics to the Roman Saturn. If so, his name has been forgotten, I think.

@LadyDuck I believe that the celebration of the 6th December was encouraged by the Lutherans in order to discourage the celebration of what they considered the pagan customs surrounding Christmas. Do you also have the day of the Three Kings on January 6th in Switzerland?

@owlwings The 6th of December is not celebrated in the Catholic countries like Spain, Italy or France. The 6th of December is celebrated in Holland and Germany and in Switzerland mainly in the German speaking part of Switzerland. Here in the south he does not bring the gifts to the children until the night of the 24th, but we have the tradition to light the fireplace. If the logs light up without problems, it's a sign of a good winter.

Father Christmas is in attendance every Saturday and Sunday from 10am till 4pm and it's in the same place every time. He also attends a 'Tea with Santa' where he greets about 20 children, reads them a story and gives out presents.

I found the truck that Santa was using in your pic a little- un-Christmas-y to say the least- haha!

I didn't think it was very appropriate but it certainly brought in the crowds (and was quite fun to ride in)!

So nice of Santa to find a way to make into the area. He is so innovative. Him and his elves.

Father Christmas seems to advance with the times!Your play-acting incarnates Father Christmas and brings kids so many joys.I can imagine how kids look forward to this great occasion at this time of the year.

I am of two minds about it, STILL, it is not my place to ruin that for a child. what their parents want them to believe or not, is up to them, not me

That's is certainly some 'sleigh'. And I have to agree that Christmas is a great time.

I love the magic of Christmas and how serious some children are when they go to visit Santa to tell what they want for Christmas. The belief is the stuff innocence is made of and I think that's part of the beauty of childhood!

That is so very cool and what a wonderful experience! Seeing all the little ones smile is what Christmas is all about.
