Making My List And Checking It Twice

This coming Monday December 5th I am flying to Arizona to see my aunt. My older and younger sister are also going. Neither of them is fond of flying and I'm pretty sure my younger sister has never flown. So that should be an interesting flight. We bought our tickets in August so they were pretty darn cheap for a round trip ticket from Chicago. We will be flying out of Midway Chicago as it's so much easier to get to than O'Hare, as we all live just a bit south of Chicago.
I haven't started packing yet but will probably start getting things ready today. I do have quite a list, but have to check to make sure I'm not taking anything the TSA says I can't. I would prefer to drive but that's way more expensive as it's about a 3 day ride from Chicago to Arizona. Seems every time I fly something new has been added to the nope you can't take it list. Another reason I would rather drive. I'm the boss not the airline or the TSA.
Apparently they have instituted some new rules, this was some time ago about these new Driver's Licences that all states in the US have to comply with. Well last time I checked 25 states were in compliance, the rest are not mostly because these states don't have the money to change over their Driver's Licence facilities to comply. Illinois is one of them. They have extended the time to comply for some of the non compliant states. But eventually if these states don't comply citizens of these states will have to have a passport to fly. It's called Real ID.
So I won't be here for about a week. But I will be back.

It's a huge pain, I went through their scanner thingy, I had my sweatshirt sleeves pushed up. They made me pull down my sleeves and go through again.

I do think that is very extreme. You are staying in the same country and you are a citizen. Doesn't that count for something at least it should.

@fishtiger58 I can tour the European Union with an ID card, yet cannot fly from Manchester to Birmingham with one.

Have a great trip, Because I live in Canada and love my family in the States I have two passports, an American and a Canadian (duel citizenship - a process we went through for our children that wanted to be in politics/military on this side of the border)... I flew in September to Seattle. Its been a while since I flew and the jumping through hoops has increased a lot.... but it is easy, just different...

@PainsOnSlate we have a few inches on the ground not sure when it's supposed to snow again. We have a high of 4 here today, I'm staying inside.

The TSA was actually pretty nice this time except one crabby lady lol. Oh well we had a great time in Arizona and am home now and it's horrible cold this evening, 3 degrees with a wind chill of 7 below

You're right about flying now and although I'm not keen on it- I will still use it if I have to but would way rather drive too

I am now in Arizona, my sisters were not to horribly happy with the flight, but we made it safely and are having a wonderful time.

I hope you have an enjoyable week with your family. I don't fly and I don't want to start. The rules and lines and aggravation just sounds way too tedious.

I hope you enjoyed your trip. I'm sure you must be b ack by now. I would rather drive than fly for all the reasons you mentioned. I have not been on a plane since the TSA entered the scene. I often wonder how useful they really are. I used to enjoy flying back in the last century, but planes were less crowded then and more comfortable. I can't afford the more expensive seats.

Seems to me more often than not the TSA has at least one agent who is just downright nasty. I see no need for that. I don't fly often either I want to be in charge of my trip

@fishtiger58 I think mine has to be renewed in few years. I know the current one is just 'basic' - had it 10 years.

@AbbyGreenhill So when you get your new one see if it looks different. I know you don't fly but just for the information ask if your new license is compliant with the new flying rules.

It's called a Real ID, a Homeland Security idea. Apparently there is a chip inside the Driver's License that can't be copied or something. They don't really say but do say you have to have one,.Tennessee is compliant have you noticed anything different about your Driver's License?

I hope you had a safe trip. We are currently in Arizona going home on Monday, so warm and beautiful here, frigid in the Chicago area now won't be happy when I get back there hate all that cold weather

carry on only, or checked luggage? harder when it is carry on, invest in travel sized things, and lots of zip lock clear baggies, that will help

@Jessicalynnt Yes I'm in Arizona now it's so beautiful here I am going to get some tree ripened oranges and grapefruit, and am having a wonderful time with my aunt. It's been in the high 60's here and at home I'm hearing it's in the low teens brrrrrrr.

Have a fun trip, and be safe! After reading your post, I checked my driver's license and discovered that it is a Real ID. I've flown several times this year and didn't even realize I already had the required ID! lol

Yup our state is still not compliant so who knows when that will happen around here. Illinois hasn't had a state budget in 18 months and now public schools are in danger of closing. This just makes me sick.

@fishtiger58 What is going on with Illinois? Why are they having budget issues? Don't they know the recession ended years ago? The economy should be doing well that they at least have a balanced budget right now, if not a surplus!

Sometimes it is but for me flying out of midway helps me avoid the bulk of the traffic. I will never fly out of O'Hare, it's probably been 20 or 30 years since I have even been to O'Hare.

When you do go I hope you enjoy your time very much. =) I haven't been on a plane in many years, I hope to again one day but since my husband is terrified to get on a plane I doubt it will happen. You will be missed the week your gone but I hope you have a ton of fun!

I need to see my aunt, she is my mom's little sister, my mom passed away in 2003, my aunt sounds just like my mom. It warms my heart, and my aunt is in fantastic shape but she is getting old. I couldn't live with myself if I didn't take this opportunity to go see her. Thanks
