Which Would You Choose?

We should all appreciate what we have when it comes to our physical well-being. Just thinking about the “five senses.” SIGHT, HEARING, SMELL, TASTE and TOUCH.
Think about this: If you HAD to give up one of those five senses, which one would you choose? Which one do you think would be the most difficult to live without? Or what about speaking or walking?
As I get older, I’m already dealing with some of these problems and I’m sure that some of you are too. And some of my older friends are having to deal with a variety of health issues.
Getting old is not easy, but even young people suffer from some of these health problems.
What do you think?

If I had to give up one, it would be smell. Eyesight and hearing are such important social tools.

@Morleyhunt I remember reading somewhere or seeing it in a documentary that when we lose the ability to smell our ability to taste goes with it.

I agree. Eyesight and hearing are very important to me too.
I see you live at Niagara Falls, Ontario. I was able to visit your area many years ago. 1968 to be exact. The Falls are beautiful. We stayed in Canada for nine days. I would love to go back some day but probably won't get the opportunity. Have you always lived there?

@maggs224 I've heard that as well. Maybe I could finally lose those pounds I want rid of?

Sight is very important, perhaps the most important to me also. I had cataract surgery recently and can appreciate having better eyesight now.

As we get old or something changes in our health like an upset tummy and suddenly food doesn't taste, I guess smell would be the least of my worries if i had to live next door to a garbage can, senses seem to fade but not disappear all together?

@IreneVincent perhaps in time the taste will come back? Steroids are really amazing but they do have side effects. I guess you have to really watch your diet now. I don't like getting old at all.

@Bluedoll Yes, I never thought that eye drops would affect my stomach. But, they go in the eyes and down through the nasal passage into the throat and end up in the stomach. I've been taking steps to restore my "gut" health, as they call it. Probiotics and certain foods that can help. I really don't want to gain any weight back however.

I lost my sense of taste after cataract surgery. That may sound crazy but I think the eye drops, which were steroids messed up my tummy and my sense of taste. My tummy is still not right and neither is my taste. I hate it. But it seems like I traded one for the other.

Sight is definitely the most important to me. Recent cataract surgery restored my eyesight, but damaged my eyelid, so now I have to deal with that. I have excellent hearing, but my taste is off. I've lost 40 pounds, which is a good thing, but I can't enjoy food anymore.

I think I could live without smell @IreneVincent . I'd trade it in a second to get my 20/15 eyesight back.

I'm sure that good vision is a priority for most people. I just can't imagine being unable to see. I hope that never happens to me.

Touch could go first then smell and taste. I don't have a good "nose" anyway and loss of taste would be good for the waistline. Sight and hearing is serious territory.

Yes, I agree with you. Sight would be the most difficult for me. I'm sure of that. It makes us appreciate what we DO have though, to think about this possibility.

I still have great hearing, well, not as great as my cat. I could not give that up or what sight I have. I guess I would give up touch. I need to have the others in my life.

That is a difficult question. I would say touch and the one I would least like to lose is sight.

There are actually persons who don't have the sense of touch and can lay their hand on a hot stove and even though they are being burned they do not feel it. That would be dangerous, but I agree that the loss of sight would be the one that I would LEAST like to lose.

Considering the possibility of losing any of these should at least make us appreciate what we DO have. And should also make us sympathetic to those who have lost any of these abilities.
