The Merry Christmas Envelopes

The first Merry Christmas envelopes have arrived. It came from the postman, the bank and the insurance company messengers with the mail and statements they delivered. I feel that these workers have fixed, but low salaries; maybe contractual and just regularly renewed, but not permanent employees. They probably don't have overtime pay, paid leaves, allowances or bonuses. This is the time of the year they're hoping we play Santa Claus to them, spare 20 or 50 pesos (40 US cents to 1 US dollar). They will stretch whatever they collect from Noche Buena (Christmas Eve) to Media Noche (New Year's Eve). They know not everyone will give, and they don't push it.

I haven't heard of these. I gather they are for customers to put small amounts of money in for the service providers, almost like tipping. Is this correct?

@JudyEv it's a way to help them celebrate the holidays. these "little people" don't receive anything else the rest of the year.

I always get envelops from garbage collectors. I am happy to put some amount inside. It is only once in a year, so why not share even a little to make other people happy.

What are these Christmas envelopes? Is it sort of asking for a small gift of money? I assume those who will be receiving the filled envelopes are very appreciative. I will always give some kind of gift to our mailperson(s) and any other service people I have come to deal with regularly.

That is also true at our place . Specially those that comes with the garbage truck , they really give those envelopes . But we never give because we pay a pedicab driver every other week to get all our garbage in sacks so he can throw it at the dumping site for all garbage. He will be the one we will give a Christmas envelope .

In France we used to offer something to the mailman, here it is forbidden to give gifts to public employees.

I have not heard of these before. Are they for charities?
