New and Improved

How do you improve on Niagara Falls? I have lots of ideas, but they involve getting rid of all the commercial aspects and returning to low rise hotels.) This year, on December 1st, new and improved lighting was unveiled. The lights are brighter, clearer (more economical) and aimed to better display the Falls at night. How do I know this? My son was on the team of electricians that installed these lights. (If there is a malfunction.....he will be the first one called.)

@Morleyhunt Tall buildings are horrible and cause so much more wind than normal. I hate it in London when it is windy!

Niagara Falls can be breathtakingly beautiful when conditions are favourable with the lights. All the tall buildings that have been built at the brink of the escarpment are changing the wind patterns so often the mist isn't clearing enough for a good light show.

@Morleyhunt I know that my parents went to Niagara Falls when they were young. My father had then a scholarship in Wood´s Hole and that was near the falls.

I have seen many different waterfalls. Niagara Falls being the biggest. There are small waterfalls at so many places within an hours drive. We live near (on) the Niagara Escarpment. Every creek, brook, river that meanders towards Lake Ontario must find their way down this wall of rock.

This looks beautiful. It must be a hard work to install those lights. This was surely an interesting project.

@Morleyhunt I know I would be scared to go inside that tunnel.

Many of the lights are in a park across from one falls. The other lights are in the gorge with tunnel access.

I avoid Niagara Falls like the plague during the summer months. The last time I went to see the lights at night, it was October, we won't say what year.....during the day...it was Jan 1 about an hour after daybreak.

Niagara Falls is gorgeous. That is good that they are changing to more economical lighting. I hope the choices are more enviornmentally friendly as well as economical.

Time will tell if it's environmentally friendly or not. Some things that save the environment on one end are worse at the other.

I like the locals there. Also the spirit of people. Lovers and newlyweds holding hands. The feeling of goodwill in the air. But that can't be regulated or bought.

If you haven't been to Niagara Falls, you will be amazed at the changes....not all of them for the better. The Skylon Tower and the Seagram (that tower has changed names so often, I can't remember what it's called right now) have been dwarfed by the high rise hotels At the edge of the escarpment.

I would think the falls are pretty the way that they are. But the lights probably add to the beauty of the falls.

You wouldn't see the falls at night if it wasn't for the lighting. There have been lights shining on the falls at night for as long as I can remember.

Niagara Falls is so beautiful, but you are right, its so built up, but its nice that they got new lighting on the star of the show. I'd love to go and see the falls during a really cold winter when there is ice, that is something that I've yet to see there.

I prefer going either very early in the morning (summer or winter) so the viewing areas are not so crowded. During the day, I'm more inclined to sit on a bench and watch the world (literally) pass by.

The lighting at the falls is just one project. He has also been involved with lots of smaller, less spectacular projects. For a number of years, when he worked with another company he was their wind turbine specialist. They even sent him to Holland to go to school for a week to learn about some of the more intricate workings.

We take it for granted. I go in the winter...last time was New Year's Day...in a snowstorm, bitterly cold...but blessedly few people.
