Does this sound legit?

I'm not a gardener of any sort. I know next to nothing about plants, or growing vegetables or flowers, or anything else that you might do outdoors. So I need some advice to tell me if what I am thinking about getting my dad's wife is a stupid gift. It has seeds to all the ingredients you need to make salsa: peppers, tomatoes, onions...And the seeds come with an egg carton that you begin to grow those veggies in, and when they get more mature you remove them from the carton and transfer them outside into your garden. Is that stupid? Are they just trying to include an egg carton aspect to make it seem like a novel idea? I can't tell, and don't want to buy something that is in reality a waste. It seemed cute, but I'm not certain it's basically just a way to just charge more for seeds.

I think it depends on how much more they are charging. Yeah, they may be trying to charge more for seeds..but seed companies need to make money too, if you like it and the price is right, I would say go for it!

It's actually not a seed company. It's a cool site called uncommongoods.com. A lot of it is hugely expensive, but I've got some great deals over the years, here and there.

I always plant my seeds using old egg cartoons. When they sprouts, I do not even need to remove the tiny plant from the cartoon, I plant the whole thing into the soil and let it grow.

@AmbiePam The egg cartoons are also good for compost and they dissolve in the soil after a few weeks. This is why they are good to start the seedlings.

They are trying to charge you more and you can just save egg cartons and buy seed packets to give this kind of gift. It does sound like a great idea and if your Dad's wife likes plants she will enjoy growing her own plants. Also to help her out you could buy her some soil to start her plants in the egg cartons. Several of my friends do start their plants indoors, as their weather is colder than mine.

Both.. seeds do need to be started indoors in something small like an egg carton.. but of course you can just buy the seeds and do the egg carton yourself It's mostly the thought that counts.. so if the price isn't right, then find something else!

As long as the egg cartons are the cardboard type. The styrofoam kind won't break down but the cardboard type will. Lots of people use the cardboard egg cartons to start seedlings. You are not being tricked.

I've gardened the way Anna has. I think that gift is probably overpriced, but a cute idea.

I love to garden, and I used to start my seedlings that way. I used to be careful to buy it after Christmas as I found it was usually over-priced if it was sold at this time of the year.

It's a cool gift if she likes gardening. :-) The egg carton step would work, but I know I would prefer the tiny size plastic cups (4oz I think) - and potting soil. If it seems high priced it probably is a gimmick - seeds aren't too expensive by themselves
