What It's All Been About

Where I spent my teenage years

Many of you have been patient with me as I've had less to write about here, while immersed in my own little space in order to get my book finished. Now the three-year journey is almost over - only another couple of hours at the library to fill in a few incomplete references and the second draft will be done. I thought I'd show you where my mind has been for the last three years, just as it was throughout most of my teenage years in the 1960s. This is my favourite photo, given to me recently by the daughter of the second-to-last custodian. I pass the completed manuscript to my editor on Wednesday or Thursday. As we worked together throughout the writing of the book I'm hoping there won't be too much work to do once she has finished with it. Meanwhile I can now start thinking about Christmas.

@valmnz Does getting close to the finish feel anything like the last length on a long race in that pool?

I am guessing you are so focused on the ending you haven't pondered the next project yet?

@Jessicalynnt topic under wraps for now, but a shorter research project and only about 4000 words in the writing. Maybe about a year to 18 months work at most. I also have a 4000 word article on the baths to write for the local Journal of Hitory before May. And a couple of short story competitions I want to enter

@JudyEv yes, I'm aiming at writing it up for the local Journal of History for 2018! A maximum of 4000 wod. It should be fun. Also have to write a 4000 article on the baths for the journal by May, so will take a slightly more thematic approach than in the book.

@valmnz How good is that? Are you sure it's shorter though? These things have a tendency to grow.

Thanks, it will have a limited market as it is a local history, but I wanted to make sure the baths weren't forgotten.

It's been a long haul for you Val, and I'm pleased that the end is in sight. So that was an open-air pool?

Yes, quite similar to most NZ pools built t the beginning of last century. We still have some outdoor pools, but new facilities being built usually have at least one pool indoors.

Maybe there is a pool nearby you can dip in
