Bus Duty

It seems that I am not responsible for any of the kids before the bus arrives.
If there was bullying and stuff, and I heard it, I should stop it, but there was not. I was at the bus stop (old school building) a little early. That was the morning there was an ice glaze on all flat concrete surfaces.
There were middle school age kids there before me. All were busy sliding down the concrete ramp. Or the metal banisters. Or the bike racks. I do not know these older kids, but I did warn them that I had not brought band aids, if they were to get hurt. I was really more concerned they would fall and break their skulls. We do have volunteer ambulance service in town and I did have my phone if I needed to call.
Two buses pick up there. One for the middle and high school, the other for the elementary. I rode that one. The bus that came for the older kids had a small child or two on it. They transload at the bus stop.
The driver was well in control of his kids. There were probably not as many as twenty riding. My four were still sleepy mostly. No problems there.
So, all in all, I would not mind doing that again.

Really, bus duty as a teacher? If I had not agreed to do the ride my supervising teacher would have had to. The kids were good on the way home as well as in the morning while they were sleepy.

@GardenGerty We had no choice but to do it. The paras weren't certified according to our city. We did have certified and trained people who rode the buses with children having special needs.

Interesting, I have never road a bus with school kids unless I was going on a field trip.

I was a bus driver for several years. I deliberately let my license lapse when various groups started asking me to "volunteer" my time. Plus I got tired of having my back to the kids all the time. I like to interact.

@GardenGerty I ran a kids bowling leagues for about 7 years as a volunteer, then the lady who was helping me had to quit, all the parents were in my face asking if I was coming back. I told them I couldn't do it alone and not one of them volunteered so I was done. My kids were out of that league by then so I didn't have a problem quitting mostly because the other parents couldn't or wouldn't help me.

good of you to remind them, and yeah, what really could you do? You aren't there for them either.

I'm glad all went well. Bullying is a hard one to solve. I remember the time I helped out at a school. I also lived near the school. The mean kids waited until the picked on kid was walking home and away from the school. Then they would land on him. Once I told him to walk near me until the stupids gave up. For that day anyway.

I know bullying has always been around. Our school is making big emphasis on preventing bullying and also on standing up for each other and resisting a bully.

Kids will slide on the ice. I remember making slides on the snow covered surfaces when we wer kids. Then someone would fall and get hurt. Then the janitor would come out and ice all our slides...boohoo.

When my kids were little we lived near a church parking lot. The snow piles from clearing it were huge. My kids got a few scrapes. My daughter ruined one pair of glasses. I do not have so many opportunities here. It would have to be the city salting the ramps if they got done here.

Yes, when you think about it it is hardo be safe on the road and still make sure children behave.

I did not mind doing that at all, and it was nice not to drive on the ice myself.

Sounds like it went normally. Good luck if you do it again.

Two weeks in a row we have had serious falls and injuries on the school grounds. I am glad it was not my turn to deal with one.

Children can be quite a handful and are very quick! Well done you for keeping them safe!

I can imagine discipline on buses could be difficult sometimes. I'm glad your bus-riding duties weren't too onerous.
