Big Words

I have a brochure put out by a local person which is full of grammatical errors, spelling mistakes and misuse of words. I've just edited this as I had quoted incorrectly. She talks about 'concurring' with your horse and wants to 'concur your dreams', which seems a very strange thing to say. It reminded me of a piece I wrote some years back and as I'm a bit short of material for a post, I thought I'd inflict this on you. Do you know a child who can't wait to grow up and use big words?
CONCENTRATION
Timothy loved learning new words – particularly if they were big words. When he came across a word he didn’t understand, he would find out its meaning then wait for an opportunity to use it as soon as possible.
When he finished dinner he would lean back, rub his tummy and say “I have had sufficient, thank you. If I have any more I shall expire”.
When he returned his library book and wanted another about dinosaurs, he would say, “Do you have something similar, please? Perhaps with more illustrations?”
He thought Harry Potter books were ‘inventive’ and ‘full of suspense’; popcorn was ‘seriously delicious’; his mother’s roses ‘exquisite’ and stubbing his toe ‘agonising’.
One day, he was working on his model plane when Andrew, his older brother, walked into the room. Timothy was frowning.
“These instructions are indec…, indeciph..“
“Indecipherable,” said Andrew.
“I was about to say that,” said Timothy.
Andrew picked up a piece of the plane. He reached across Timothy to look at the packet.
“You’ve missed out a piece,” said Andrew.
“I don’t believe I have. I have followed the instructions meticulously. If you don’t mind, I’d prefer to work on my own. This requires all my constipation.”
“You stupid idiot,” said Andrew. “Constipation is when you can’t do your poo. You mean ‘concentration’.
Timothy’s face went red. But he still loved big words! And now he knew two more.
The photo is of a little friend with Oscar, not Herc this time.

I've conferred with a horse before. Of course, I was drunk at the time. Just kidding.

I've just found the brochure again and what I was looking for was 'concur', not 'confer' although she does say that as well. Here's another line: I want to help you concur your dreams. And another 'Concur problems with your horse'. I think she had just learnt 'concur' but didn't look up the meaning.

@JudyEv - Oh, I've never concurred with a horse. They're wrong about everything!

It seems I missed a heap of comments last December. Sorry about that. Oscar was nice enough but he bullied poor Herc terribly so he was never my favourite.

Some words have to be pronounced carefully otherwise they take on a whole new meaning, lol. Like with my 7 year old she loves bagels and when she asks for one she says bangles, lol We're working on that one.

Kids come up with some great words don't they? Our son used to say 'gubs' for 'gloves'. It sounded really cute.

So funny how Timothy use words. At least he appreciates being corrected.

That is funny. In the fourth grade classroom yesterday they were doing an acrostic based on their last names. One nine year old told me "I am using big words so I will look smarter' as she looked in the dictionary.

Yes, it's a bad idea to try to impress using big words unless you are positive you're using them correctly.

That is a cute story.
Have you noticed there are errors on the front page of AOL, Yahoo!, etc. every time you read. It is a disgrace.

I don't think I've seen those particular ones but you don't have to go far to find errors in printed or online literature.

loved the story, too. sounds like my eldest son 'n his thirst fer words/knowledge. he sadly ne'er learnt that 'normal folk' don't comprehend all his big'n fancy words.

I had a 9-year-old client a couple of years of years ago who was very poor and listened to too many "rap" "songs." He told me, "When I get older, I'll have a sports car with girls in zucchinis in the back." I told him I liked "girls in zucchinis" too. We worked together for a year and I never told him that "hot girls" don't wear zucchinis.

I wonder at what point he worked it out - or was told by someone else or whatever. :)
