A Major DIY Task on our 'New' Car

We bought a new (used) car about a month ago. We weren't planning to do so just yet but a BMW X5 4WD came up for sale. We knew and trusted the seller and it seemed like it was meant so we bought it. It is ten years old and has a good number of miles but we can't afford to pay too much and we wanted a 4WD to get to a few more 'rough' places around this great country of ours. And we've already been able to sell the Holden Calais. However, the other day the front window went down and wouldn't come up again. After going back and forth to YouTube videos a considerable number of times, Vince managed to fix the window. It took most of the day but that is of little consequence. Once or twice he thought he had reached the limit of what he could do but eventually we got it all back together again. In the process the airbag assembly had to be removed so I thought you might be interested to see what is looks like before it goes off. The white bit in the middle is the actual bag. The capsule type thing on the right hand side is full of the stuff that makes the bag blow up. I'll do a separate post on that. The bag explodes out the other side of the assembly and you can see dotted lines where the covering splits to allow the bag out.

@JudyEv well, I am pretty sure you couldn't just set it off, but I would have done the same, lol

@Jessicalynnt There are a few stories about them going off when they shouldn't so we were a bit concerned.

I was surprised too. We handled it very gingerly when we had it out. :)

@JudyEv I've never activated one myself but I know a number of old folk who have done so while stationary.

Me too. I thought people might be interested. Usually you just see a huge white bag in someone's face.

It's very handy to have a 'Jack of all trades' around isn't it?..

Vince has saved us thousands over the years in all sorts of ways - and I'm pretty good at asking the right questions too. (Don't want him getting all the credit!)

I was intrigued too. The way they work is pretty clever and I'm going to post about that one day.

And now I know what the inside of an airbag looks like. Nothing like I'd imagined.

Nothing like I imagined either although I don't know what I expected. Something bigger I guess.

Sometimes airbags refuse to open at the moment of crisis.

That's true, and they can cause damage themselves when they do go off.

That is interesting, I've never known what those look like. There is a factory in our area that sews the bags that they use in the safety air bags.

The way airbags work is pretty amazing too so I'll write on that later. Fancy the factory being near you.
