Tea comes from the plant Camellia sinensis and is of the evergreen family. White, oolong, black and green types of teas all come from the same white flowering shrub. The leaves and buds are processed differently to make these different types of teas. Green and white are less processed and seem to have the highest polyphenol levels. Black tea is fermented. Herbal teas come from different plants and having varying antioxidant levels. To get the optimal polyphenol tea you will want to steep the bag or loose tea for 5 minutes. Adding honey or lemon , or opting for decaf or iced tea won't alliminate the health benefits of the tea. You would have to drink about seven or eight cups of tea during the day to keep levels of polyphenol at it's peak. These levels drop about two hours after you drink the last of the tea.

@just4him .......We need to be sure of drinking plenty of water too. Don't want to get dehydrated.

@celticeagle I drink more water than I do tea. Though now with winter on us, I'm starting to drink tea more.

I don't like tea. But maybe I should look in the supermarket for healthy tea and give it a try. Why is polyphenol important?

I love tea but can only drink it very occasionally now. I used to be able to drink lots of it, but due to bladder issue can no longer tolerate it.

I love a good cup of hot tea on a cold winter morning like today. It's good for you and healthier than coffee.

You remind me of a song from an old pre-war musical. I have become a tea drinker after years of coffee. It is a very pleasant drink and knowing it is healthy adds to the flavor.

I seem to have become too sensitive to coffee. It makes me jittery now days, more than usual, so I go for tea when I can. Finding this info out has been an added plus. There are so many different flavors to try too.
