Another chain on the way out?

United States
January 5, 2017 7:14am CST
We all know that actual physical stores are taking a beating. With online shopping becoming the way of the world, stores are closing left and right. Even stores with big time names and reputations.... It was announced that Macy's will be closing 68 stores and letting over 10,000 employees go. Hum, I wonder if Trump will jump on their case. After all Macy's is a New York City icon. Hey Trump, maybe you could sink a few million into Macy's and get them to hang onto those stores and employees - what do you say? @Happy2BeMe Sears and Penny's went out a few years ago around here. Macy's is a name known all over the world, probably partly due to the parade.

@AbbyGreenhill lol that is wonderful. We had a big chain here back in the day called Eaton's, my mom did all her shopping there. They went under many years ago now but I always remember that all our clothes came from the Eaton's catalogue. After that it was Sears and Sears isn't doing too well these days either.

I love my Macy's so I'm sad to hear it go! Luckily my favorite stores are still existing. Sears and K-Mart is closing 150 total branches as well.

@AbbyGreenhill K-Mart closes years ago here! But there is still one location but its too far to drive. I don't often go to Sears, but knick knacks I do plus I play their games and win points so I use it toward useful home stuff (like flashlights, storage boxes, knick knacks aka junk) But I am sad Macy's is reducing the workforce. I browse the site daily and go often so hopefully I can help my local Macy's from closing. I'd be lost!

I don't think online stores are a bad idea sweetie! They employ more people! Imagine more orders, and more people being employed by courier services and logistics and storage management and purchase order management etc. Merely because we can't see the employment visually does not mean there is no employment! Isn't subway a good thing?

@AbbyGreenhill .. No...there are a lot of people involved, directly or indirectly. The only difference is payscales are different.

@vandana7 If a little old lady has been working at Macy's for many years and gets laid off, she is not going to work at an online store. Macy's said they are letting go 10,000 people and I would bet most of the till not be working at Macy's online store.

I would bet the farm that only a small percent of people work the online stores compared to the real stores. And since they are phone centers they may not even be in the US.

I saw the listing . . . it seems ours is staying, but I saw some others in the outskirts have closed (I didn't even know there would be closures but I'm not surprised). Some other stores in and around have closed in recent years . . . some of those huge spaces are still very vacant.

@AbbyGreenhill I'd have to agree with you . . . surely they saw this coming and had plans from long ago.

They said it is due to poor holiday sales, but I would imagine the sale have been poor a lot longer than that.

@AbbyGreenhill Nope, they send by courier and no courier comes out here. It has to come by Canada Post for me to be able to order.

Wow I hadn't heard that. I have also heard that cable and satellite tv is going to bite the dust sometime as well.

Well, if they do away with satellite I might as well crawl in the ground and cover myself with dirt.

It would take a lot more than a few million because the wage bill alone must be millions per year.

@AbbyGreenhill Quite possibly, but the cash would not change the fact that business is not operating at a profit, so he would be delaying the inevitable.

Some people like to go to a store and there are older folks who don't do computers so this will hurt them.

That crossed my mind yesterday when I read about Macy's closing some stores, "will Trump help keep them open"?

He would take credit for it if it did happen for other reasons.

We have been wondering if our local Macy's will close. It and Penneys are anchors in our local mall and neither are doing well. I hate to see the jobs go, but the stores are of little interest.

Pennys and Sears will be closing more stores too. I was never a fan of Sears, but Macy's yes.

It is worrying that such big chains are closing stores. Surely the online stores are employing people? I guess not in affluent Western nations perhaps.

We have one near us that will be closing. I think they said on the news that this would affect about 60 employees. Trump could do a lot with his money. I wonder how much he will make will in office.

And Trump has/had his line of shirts there-but, so many are closing. No clue who will be gone next after the Sears/KMart stores finish closing here too.

Sears has been failing for years and will be closing 150 stores this year. No one can stop this trend. I realize everyone loves online shopping but it's time to acknowledge the damage it has caused: loss of 1000s of jobs. Every time you order Macy's online, you have contributed to someone losing their job.

I don't buy from Macy's at all! But I do most of my shopping online since we have very few actual stores to pick from within an hour of me.
