A Nice Cup of Tea

When an English person asks you if you would like a cup of tea, they often say ‘would you like a nice cup of tea?’ Rather strange really since no-one is going to offer you tea that is not ‘nice’. The reason for this seems to be that the expression has become part of our culture probably due to a pre war musical in which the following song was sung: 'I like a nice cup of tea with my breakfast, just to start the day you see, And round about eleven, my idea of heaven, is a nice cup of tea. I like a nice cup of tea with my dinner, and a nice cup of tea with my tea And when I go to rest, the thing that I like best, is a nice cup of tea'. Looking back to my parents’ generation they consumed at least the five cups of tea described above and my father would have almost trebled that. Tea is supposed to be a healthy beverage but if it is accompanied by a teaspoon full of sugar in each cup, as is often the case, it would amount to quite a high consumption of calories in the course of a day. Since researching the origins of the song I have found myself singing it at the appropriate times, when ‘a nice cup of tea’ is most welcome. It makes me feel at home perhaps because I am living abroad where coffee is the drink I am usually offered and if a cup of tea is available it is never described as ‘nice’! If you want to sing along with me you can hear it on Utube.

I have always heard that "nice cup of tea" in movies and TV shows as well. I will look it up since I would love to hear the tune. We drink a fair amount of tea, black, green and herbal in the afternoons after copious quantities of coffee in the morning. Neither of uses sugar in tea or coffee.

Tea does not have that 'wake up' effect that coffee does, but it does quench my thirst and I am often thirsty in the morning. I have my cup of coffee at eleven with a nice chocolate biscuit!

Those old tunes sound so funny to me @41CombedaleRoad I'm not sure if it's because of their voices or the equipment they recorded the song on. The tune is cute.

There is a version by Gracie Fields which is as old as the hills but does get the atmosphere of the old times.

It is comforting to have one and they are, many anyway, good for us. I recently wrote about that.

Being from West Midlands U.K. my preference is tea above Coffee. Its the same for me here if I only want a Cup of Tea its to them only a Cup of Tea not a nice Cup of Tea. I don´t take any notice as now a Tea is more acceptable in a Bar than wha is used to be.

I know how you feel as an expat. At least in Spain it only rains on the plain and you have warm weather - we can adjust to the lack of enthusiasm towards our nice cup of tea.

Some do think putting the word 'nice' in front of something, anything, makes it better.

We always drank tea in our house and would have at least five a day too. I love the English Rose pattern of your cup and saucer and have just a few pieces of it.

I like tea but I prefer coffee. I am big on coffee. Although there are those offbeat times that I just love to have tea.

I'm going to look it up, I'm not familiar with the song. My parents were coffee drinkers, tea on;y when they were getting over a cold or something like that. I love tea, no sugar and enjoy a few cups a week in the afternoon.

I generally enjoy a cup of tea in the evening. Other than that, it is usually coffee. Yes, I do put in more sugar than is recommended.
