Wipers up or down?

Well, it is snowing here in NJ today, which leads me to wonder....when did it become common for people to put their wipers up (standing up from the windshield) when it snows? I was always taught to leave them down (and of course, no matter what you do with the wipers, make sure they are turned "off" so that if they freeze, the motor doesn't break when you turn the car on). I guess the idea is that they won't freeze to the windshield, but the way I see it, they could freeze in the "standing" position, so how is that better? Oddly, I first noticed my neighbors who moved here from NY doing that, but I've since noticed others doing it, too. I wonder if it is a regional thing.

I have a garage, and I swear some winter I am actually going to be able to park the car in it!

My fiance just asked me through same question a few days ago. Everybody is doing it here too. Not sure why it has become so popular to do so.

I almost wished I had done this the other day, since of course, my wipers froze to the windshield! But for some reason, I always thought they could break if you left them up like that and they froze. Oh well.

No clue why it would be done unless it will really prevent freezing to the windshield. Or, frying to the windshield in hot weather.

I've only seen it when it snows, I guess it is to prevent freezing to the windshield, but it just seems wrong to me!

I just noticed this last winter or maybe the winter before. It is such a good idea as sometimes the wiper blades did freeze to the windshield and this prevents it.
