Why the sim cards can't be the same?

At first the sim card just had one size and let's called it as "standard sim card" until one day iPhone had its special size sim card. And later there were micro sim cards. Actually the micro sim cards come from the standard ones. So it is no more problem. Now when I am going to buy a new smartphone, I suddenly found that today many advanced Android phone use a sim card called nano sim card. It is smaller than the micro sim card. This is very inconvenient for me. As I have to go to the mobile phone company to change a new nano sim card with my micro sim card. It may be OK. But after that I can't even use my old mobile phone as the backup one as it supports micro sim card only Why they can't make all the sim cards the same size?

Can you ask the phone company to give you a new nano card while retaining the old one? I doubt they want to do that, but no harm asking. I also find it a pain to have so many different sizes of sim card. If you travel overseas and you want to use the local prepaid sim card, you will have to bring along your old phone. Your new phone cannot use for the larger sim card.

Yes, it is no problem for them to give me a nano card. The problem is I can't use my old phone any more since it uses micro sim card. I asked the phone company what if I want to use my old phone. They told me then I have to change the micro card again with my nano card

@youless Just keep your phone for overseas when it is cheaper to get the local sim card. It will come in handy.

there's a lot of products that could be universal that they don't do it to .i think some phones do it so to keep using it,you have to buy their phone again when you upgrade.

If one sim fitted all phones that would be too simple! Life always has to get complicated especially if it means they make more money

In the past all the sim cards had the same size. I blamed Apple that broke this rule.

@youless Yes and then all of the others follow, especially if they realise that there is money to be made

Have you noticed that, as phones are getting bigger again, SIM cards are getting smaller?

You are right. In fact 5" cellphone is already good for me. Today the smartphone is usually over 5.5"

@youless Until smartphones came out, manufacturers were trying to make phones as small as possible. Now people use so many smartphones, tiny screens are no good for reading things. We need holographic displays!

You can get one of those sim card clippers for a very cheap price. It will serve you forever, unless they come up with new sim card sizes.

I know I can have a nano sim card easily. The problem is I can't use my old cellphone any more because it uses only micro sim card. I like the sim card which can fit both so that I can switch it if it is necessary.

They now make cell phone where all the plugs are the same and the plugs are the same for lap tops. So maybe they will make the sim cards the same. We can only hope so any way.

If all the cards were the same size, the companies wouldn't be able to charge us for new cards. It's very simple really.
