No Escape from Colditz - or so they thought

When we were travelling through Germany in a motor-home in 2015 we unexpectedly came across the town of Colditz and its castle which dates back to the Middle Ages. The castle become known internationally when it became a prisoner-of-war camp during World War II. Allied officers who had repeatedly escaped from other camps were held there as it was believed to be almost impossible to escape from the place. A large German garrison occupied the larger outer court and the prisoners lived in an adjacent courtyard building. The official name was Oflag IV-C. Despite being so fortified, it had one of the highest records of successful escape attempts. Its history makes fascinating reading. Among the informational signs within the museum is a list of hundreds of items secreted from supplies and used in escape attempts. Maybe guards became slack believing escape was not an option. There was even a glider in production in one of the more remote areas of the castle. Plans were smuggled out at the end of the war and the glider later recreated, It was found that it would have been capable of playing its part in an escape attempt. Among the occupants were Douglas Bader, British flying ace and double amputee, Desmond Llewleyn who later played Q in 17 James Bond movies, Airey Neave, Conservative MP, and David Stirling, founder of the SAS. The castle is now open to the public and we met a very friendly and interesting Scotsman there who is a volunteer. There is a museum, guided tours are conducted and the chapel has been impressively restored. Glass panels in the flag stone floor reveal the escape tunnel dug by French escapees. The outer courtyard and guard quarters are now used as a youth hostel and hotel.

I believe that there is no place in the world from where it is impossible to escape. Fortified prisons on remote islands have proven that desperate people are capable of everything.

@JudyEv If you can get in, there is also a way to get out. It's the same for the computers, if you can access your stuff, everybody, who is a nerd, can.

I agree with you. Just like it is difficult to stop hackers, so it is difficult to stop people escaping.

Oh how pretty! I'd love to see that.. though visiting Germany isn't really on my list of things to do in my life. I'd like to go to Europe but my plains mainly involve England, Italy, France, and maybe Scotland or Ireland.

@JudyEv Ah, so lucky! Maybe when I am older and don't have as many mouths to feed I will be able to take vacations like that too!

We've managed to see a little bit of all those countries. We had five months in Europe in 2015 and had a great time tootling along mostly back roads. We're going back probably in April/May for another few months and then will probably sell the van.

@katsmeow1213 Again for us the motor-home was a good idea. The vehicle was quite cheap compared to Australia. We couldn't have done it if we had to pay for hotels or whatever everywhere we went. We think we will get almost all our money back on the van when we sell it.

Interesting.! Did you acquire that information there, or did you read it somewhere else. I would definitely want to visit one of those someday.

From old films and background knowledge we knew Colditz had been a POW camp but we stumbled across it accidentally.

Hatching plans to escape probably helped keep them sane and kept their captors on their toes too.

It was very interesting. In the courtyard they were excavating some ruins which was like a walk-in spa bath. After a day's hunting, the horses would be walking into the hot-water 'spa' and washed down while soaking their legs.

Men and women become very resourceful when then are trying to escape, in my family it's a standing joke. Tell us something is impossible and we will show you just how quickly we will accomplish the task.

@JudyEv most of us rise up and 'attack' the challenge. Some, crumple in the face of the same challenge.

@Morleyhunt That's true. We grit our teeth and get stuck in if something gets a bit tricky.

The 'impossible' is just regarded as a challenge isn't it? Then there is some sort of saying, something about 'difficult might take a week, the impossible a little longer'. I haven't got it right but you get the picture.

That prison on Alcatraz Island off California seemed to be one from where no one could escape. The water between land and the island is so cold that no one can swim in there. That is what we were told when we visited that place. Al Capone was imprisoned there.

That is a modern looking castle, nothing at all like the ones I'd seen pictures of in Britain.

That is so cool, I love your historical posts. Living here in America, my history doesn't go back so far and as far as I know, there is no castle that is anything like this one.

Is that where the film The Great escape was based on? I seem to remember when the film came out a local man, father of someone I knew, had been in Colditz.

Apparently the Great Escape was based on an escape from Stalag Luft III which was a different place.

Very interesting information! Germany has so many amazing castles, and very rich history behind them too. I went to a few in Cologne during my visit, but I wish I had the time to explore many more in other cities and districts.

What you see in the photo is of the garrisons' quarters. The prison was for officers so they were treated a bit better than the rank file POWs.

It was amazing what they managed to hide and do. I wish I could find the list of stuff they pilfered to help with their efforts. There were hundreds of items - wooden beds dismantled to make other things, rugs, sheets, tin saucepans etc. I wish we could have spent more time there.

I think there might be several movies based on Colditz but they would be quite old I think. I've never heard of a TV series.
