All dressed up to go shopping.

A couple of ladies were recently photographed doing their shopping in a large UK supermarket. The attention was to shame the women who were dressed in their pyjamas. It caused quite a stir when the photo was placed on the supermarket’s Facebook page. The man who took the photograph said it was ‘disgusting ‘ and called for rules on dress code. When I go shopping I do not pay much attention to my clothes, but when I visited a relation in the USA she frowned on my jeans and suggested that I needed to dress up a bit before we went shopping together. When I moved to a more expensive area in England the first thing I noticed was that the women looked smart in the supermarket! When I moved to Greece I saw holiday makers in the supermarket wearing little more than a see-through covering over a bikini. The men did not even bother to put on shirts! Personally I did not like to see so much uncovered flesh in the shops! I think that the rules, if any are set out, should only cover the hygiene aspects of what we wear in shops selling food. What do you think?

@41combedaleroad I have a dentist friend who now sends patients home if they appear in nightware!

I cannot understand anyone going anywhere in their pyjamas. Who brought them up? And once they're grown, surely their own self-esteem would stop them going out in their nightwear.

Where I live there is only one rule, "no shirt, no shoes, no service", I do have to wonder what they'd do if someone waltzed in with no pants etc. Actually I would think that as long was a person is wearing a shirt/blouse/dress,pants and shoes then there shouldn't be a problem, so far here I haven't seen anyone in pyjamas, but if they're not overly revealing then where's the problem? Too each their own I suppose. What I don't get is dressing up to go shopping, why do people do that?

Some people may have an image of themselves that they want to maintain and dressing to look smart or fashionable, or cool, may be the reason why they do it.

I just try to look clean, that way if they smell something foul they won't think it's me @41CombedaleRoad

I do agree but also, dressing up can do a lot for the mood.

That's true, I played a party game once where I had to get a little dressed up and it changed my personality - there's a post in there somewhere...

Have you ever seen one of those Wal-Mart shoppers photo collections online? Here in the states, the dress code for grocery shopping appears to be somewhat open to interpretation. As long as certain bits and pieces are covered, it's come as you are.

When I lived in Monte-Carlo there was a dress code even to walk in the streets, no men without a shirt, no women in bikini, all people, including children, had to wear shoes (or sandals), but no barefoot.

I cannot imagine anyone going shopping in pyjamas. Why on earth would anyone do that? I don't get dressed up to go to the supermarket but I am clean and tidy. My 'work' clothes are hardly fit for shopping trips and if someone arrives unexpectedly I might rush off and change depending on what I am wearing.

their excuse was that they were ready for bed and then realized they needed some milk for a baby! My work clothes are only fit for the garden really.

It does seem hygiene would be most important. So many have no shame or sense of what is right these days.

I love living here in the suburbs. I am always dressed when going shopping but I can wear comfy and well worn clothing.

We see a fair amount of shoppers in their PJs. I can't imagine going out in public like that.

I would never go shopping with my pjs on but if people want to it doesn't bother me. As long as you are covered then you should be able to shop how you choose.
