Short Descriptive Writing Exercise – Eyes

The last of the three creative writing exercises I set for the writing group I ran at weekend was to do a purely descriptive piece, involving part of the human body, such as the eye, hair, fingers, noses etc. A few writers even went for describing internal organs including the belly and liver. I wrote my own piece on the eyes. Eyes They say the eyes are the windows to the soul but these eyes stared back into mine so intensely that they seemed to bore right through my soul without revealing anything about the lady they belong to. They were eyes of blazing intense curiosity, so blue it was as though she was filled with sky inside, and the eyes were wide open with wonder s though they could not take in enough natural sunlight or absorb enough information about me or our surroundings. Her eyes barely blinked as if she was afraid to close them, and when unable to avoid blinking any longer, the reflex blink was fast, like that of a high speed camera lens, afraid that the slightest delay might spoil the image before her or open the eyes to find the scene had changed entirely for something different. Her eyes held mine trapped, unable to set me free to gaze upon her surrounding gentle face. We were not gazing lovingly into one another’s eyes. I was being consumed by hers, and I wondered what she must make of my soft, weak brown eyes, reflecting back my sadness, longing, needs. She spoke to me, but I couldn’t make out the words uttered. I was too lost in her infinitely deep eyes for what I hoped was forever. Arthur Chappell

I would venture a guess that the soul seen peeking out of those eyes had power or age or both

I don't think I've ever seen eyes that striking.

@arthurchappell Arthur, that was very very good. You are very talented. Do you write short stories or books? Are you leading the creative writing groups?
