In the photo, there is Mini, my youngest son, and Crackers, the daft cat. About a year ago (or a little under), I was asked if I would take care of Crackers for a week. Well, that week came and went. After a little longer than a week, I was informed that her people mummy was not able to take her back just yet. No problem, I thought. She'd left some food and litter and I didn't mind getting a bit more for another week or so.
Well, again, time came and went. I said I would have Crackers for as long as necessary. Of course, I was under the impression that this would be, perhaps, another few weeks or so.
Hardly hearing from her people mummy or the mutual friend who had done all the arranging and delivering and collecting, we got used to having Crackers around. We had said that it was unlikely that she'd want to leave us after so long. My other half, D, also said that it wouldn't be fair on Crackers and that he'd argue about letting her return anyway.
Well, she was someone else's cat so I would have given her back. Yesterday, I discovered (not asked or told directly) that Crackers was to stay with us permanently. Now, of course, I don't mind as she's come to be part of the family but if I'd been asked to adopt the cat or known I'd have had her for so much longer than expected, I'd have probably said no to taking her.
Her original people mummy has said she couldn't care for her and that I've given her what she couldn't. That's all very well but I'm still waiting for the help she was going to give towards food, etc. and I'm a little put out that it's been assumed I'm able to give her all she needs. Obviously, I will, but I'm not in much better a position than her original people mummy.
Anyway, so Crackers isn't exactly a new member of the family. I supposed you could say she'd been fostered up until now, and now she's adopted.
So, welcome to the family, you nutty creature.

It would have been better if the person could have been a little more forthcoming with details and help! Many people seem to acquire new furry friends in rather odd ways. We have some cats and dogs that just wandered into our world and stayed.

I had been under the impression that it would be temporary and the original owner seemed to be missing her, and making a big deal about how distraught she is to give her up permanently.
She is a lovely cat. She's part of the family and we're used to having her around now. She's smelly, messy, and completely bonkers so she fits right in with my two sons!

@pumpkinjam Was she like that when she first came (smelly, messy and bonkers)? Or did she become like that after a while?

@JudyEv She was like that when she got here, honest Miss! :D She was already a bit nutty and everything else. She's become more nutty over time, slightly less messy, and she's currently quite smelly because it's too cold for her to go outside (so she's using her litter tray more).

It seems that Mini is quite content with having an addition to the family.

@1hopefulman Not so much now but she is a bit of a scratcher. She also bites. Only playfully, though, and she doesn't hurt. She seems to have learned who will let her bite and who will not.
