Why is it called February?

The second month of the year, February, is associated today mostly with St Valentine and his blessing uopn lovers but the month is named after a much older Roman festival, Februalia, a festival of cleansing and ritual purification, which happened between the 13th and the 15th of the month, about the same time as St Valentine's day, in fact. Some people say that the word 'februa' is associated with the word 'fever', because the sweating which a fever produces is a sort of cleansing or purging. Is it coincidental that February is often a month when colds and flu take a hold? I remember, when I was little, my mother always used to have a huge spring cleaning when all the rugs and carpets were taken ouside and beaten to get the dust out, floors and walls were washed and all the nooks and crannies cleaned of the dust and dirt they had collected over the winter. Not so many people do this thorough cleaning these days, perhaps because we have less time and more efficient cleaning appliances to keep our homes dust-free.

I guess I could use a February cleansing, not sure it will happen. You had new facts for me today. I never thought much about February, except it seems often dreary.

Thanks for sharing interesting information about the month of February, however, I was wondering why the number of days are less in February than other months?

Nobody really seems to know but it looks as if February was an afterthought, used to make up the deficit in the number of days in a year. There are various theories, none of which are entirely convincing, but February was certainly at one time one of the last months in the year. This is one explanation (though a bit complicated and open to debate):
Some believe February once boasted 29 days and that Augustus Caesar stole a day so he could add it to August, which was named for him. (If there’s a month named after you, why not milk it?) But that’s a myth.

@owlwings Many thanks for making an effort to find out the reasons of less days in the month of February and sharing the link. I think till we find another valid explanation, the explanation given in the link seems appropriate.

True everything in our world right now can be done through electronic or via computer technology. We don't have to suffer from manual cleaning of dirty and heavy stuff. I think it is better to smell all the dust and dirt accumulated by the rags and clothes.

I do Spring cleaning each year but it is nothing like my mom use to go. When she did it everything was cleaned from top to bottom. The windows would be open to air things out. Everything was washed and cleaned and polished.

Yes, that's what happened in our house. I remember beating the carpets as they hung on the washing line (of course there were no such things as fitted carpets in those days!).

I am always cleaning an awful lot I never seem to stop. But it is very interesting to know what they did and why it was celebrated. I used to clean everything out in my Mom´s House when I was small too but again any time of the year.

We did the same spring cleaning at home too, when I was young! It was a process that lasted for a week or more, with all the rugs and winter carpets! I didn't know the facts about February but I like this month more than January! Have a great month!

We used to celebrate Carnival in Italy in February. "Semel in anno licet insanire" (once a year we are allowed to be crazy) a festive time before the Lent. We do the spring cleaning in March, usually after we turn off the heating.

mom still does this, but it's more about airing the house out and cleaning a ton with things best used when one has air flow, after a winter of being shut up

Interesting. Somehow those were facts I wasn't aware of. The origins of the rest of the names of the month were known to me but somehow February escaped me. We cleaned our home in the spring to get rid of the leaven....sometimes this got to the point where it was silly.

I found that I knew the origin of the names of most of the months (I'm still not quite sure about March and April, but I will come to that, perhaps, when it's due!) and wondered about February. It's still a little too early for spring cleaning here. I think that it usually happened in March or April in our house, probably in time for Easter.

I think in Australia there isn't a huge difference between seasons so spring cleaning isn't the ritual that it is in some other countries.
