Piazza San Marco (St.Mark's Square).

For most, the Piazza of San Marco is the heart of Venice. Most people are drawn there simply because of the buildings that are on the perimeters of the square. Around the outside of the square are pavement cafes and restaurants. It is 'THE' place to people watch and soak up the atmosphere but at a price of course! If you want to sit and have a coffee it alone will cost you in the region of £17-£20 or $23+ or around 20 Euro for the experience. Now I mention the experience because it is not just some kind of starbucks or costa this is soaking up the atmosphere with small string quartets on band stands playing popular music whilst you sit sipping your wonderful Italian coffee. Actually, if you want a decent meal in Venice. Do not eat in St Marks square, slip out of the square to some of the side streets away from this tourist attraction and find a little Trattoria or Osteria to eat some delicious Italian food. St Marks square also contains among other things the Basilica of St Mark which is a beautiful and stunning piece of architecture. It is attached to the Doges palace next door. If you think the outside is beautiful wait till you step inside the building. The descriptions will wait for another post. There is also St Marks Tower which gives a bird's eye view of Venice. Also opposite St Marks Basilica, there is a building with a massive glass screen clock. To the right of that is an unremarkable looking building a former church where the L’Orchestra dei Virtuosi di Venezia perform Le Quattro Stagioni. Vivaldi's four seasons. Most of the water bus routes call into St Marks hence it being so busy. People converge on this very popular area to view the gondola's moored at the edge of the promenade, over- looking the lagoon, the Doges palace, Basilica and all of St Marks. It is extremely busy and the queues are very long to get into these places. It is a good idea to pre-book your tickets. You could spend hours here gawping at these buildings and at the laughing, giggling tourists waiting patiently to go into these amazing buildings.

Gary you have a typo Tratorria, that must be written Trattoria. My father made the big mistake to have a drink at an outside cafe in Piazza San Marco, the most horrible service, worst cafe and most expensive bills we ever got. He never complained, so he did not complain, but we never went back to Venice.

Thanks Anna. I will edit. I know what you mean poor quality and extortionate prices! But I guess all the time people are gullible enough to pay those prices they will remain high!

@garymarsh6 I have not checked if sites like TripAdvisor warn customers about the poor service and the extortionate prices in Piazza San Marco, I hope they do. Gary, you made wrong again Trattoria 2 T and 1 R only.

I wish I could find the picture of me and my brother there, in our matching suits, right after our mom found us. The two saddest faces you've ever seen.

OH dear it must have been so distressing for you. Getting lost in a foreign place with all that unusual lingo being spoken around you!

It is a real treat to eat there. I have never had a bad meal in Venice. Bad service in one place but the food made up for it.

@garymarsh6 I'm told that at 5 o'clock on a spring morning Piazzo Sam Marco is heartbreakingly beautiful - The tourists start to arrive after breakfast.

OH yes it is wonderful to be out early morning. You practically have the city to yourself. Once all the tourists have gone after around 5ish things start to settle for those staying there.

From the Square we went up this narrow alleyway which was basically one-way particularly if you had luggage and we'd come out into a smaller square with a cafe or two and entrances to blocks of accommodation. Then we'd go through another tiny alleyway to get eventually to our hotel.

It is quite like a maze but you are rewarded with beautiful sights when you meander through the little alleyways!

The photo contains a wonderful example of architecture. Isn't it amazing they could build these beautiful structures standing centuries with primitive labor and yet we get less than these days.

Exactly, newer structures are not as pleasing on the eye are probably won't outlast some of these great buildings.
