The Red Pants

Canada
February 5, 2017 8:59am CST
Last week @JudyEv wrote about her husband and shortening his new pants. We talked a bit about sewing and I had to look for the photo above... When I was a child I belonged to 4-H, a club for country kids. We girls learned how to sew, how to cook, how to garden. I spent years in 4-H and became a really good seamstress. I made a lot of my own clothes and after I married and had children I made most of my daughter's clothes. Just for fun when the bright colors came out in polyester ( the 60's and 70's) I bought a pattern for my husband to make some golf pants for him. I doubted he would wear them, but what a surprise when he did and asked for more colors. His favorite was the red pair in the photo and I made a bright blue too. They lasted for years. My husband wore them to work (a football coach so no suit needed) and he wore them golfing. I made them before my daughter was born. In this photo she looks like she is pushing 2 years old.. He wore them out. I was happy he liked them and wore them. Just another walk down Memory Lane.

Congratulations, those red pants are very well done. I also learned how to sew in school, I have made many clothes for me, but never pants for my husband.

@PainsOnSlate To sew men pants it's much harder than to sew women dresses.

It was a whim, I don't remember if he asked me to make him some pants or if I suggested it but he loved them.

@LadyDuck The fabric was the reason I did it, so easy to sew...

That's so cool! I wish I could do that, but I never really learned to sew. I'm sure making your own clothes is much more economical than buying them!

It was when I was doing it...I can't be bothered anymore, fabric prices have gone skyward and I gave my sewing machine away.

You triggered a memory for me. I made my first husband a couple of shirts. He wore them too, even though the sleeves were not as long as needed. The man was 6'5" and his arms were quite long. I believe that one shirt had a paisley print and he loved it.

@ElusiveButterfly I oly did it because of the fabric, he wanted golf pants, I wouldn't do it for dressier pants, the polyester made me do it.

First, I love this picture--I used to ride on my dad's shoulders in much the same way and this brought back memories for me--You must be quite skilled at sewing! I grew up in a household where we learned to sew and knit and embroider and crochet--and I still engage in much of this--sewing maybe less than the other ones--fabric has gotten to be so expensive! I still look for fabric for my sister who is an excellent quilter--she does art quilts--but I always loved sewing-4H was great for you!

My sister does quilts too, i don't sew anymore, I do paint and that is enough creativity for me. I haven't been in a fabric store for years... Nice to see you around here, keep it up!

You took more away from your 4-H membership then I did! Although I can still bake bread from scratch and can make some pretty good looking embroidery stitiches.

@PainsOnSlate Mine was also, but she did not have the patience to teach a struggling, questioning young member like myself. I learned a bit in home ec in high school, and one day I hope to take a sewing class as I think that I'd catch on pretty quickly given my background.

I made most of my children's clothing. They were much too tall and skinny for "store bought" pants and dresses. My one daughter wore a girls size 4 until she was ten years old...I just kept making the pattern longer....now she's 6'1" and wears a ladies size 6.

Wow, tall children can be hard to get clothes for...My husband is a short Greek guy so all my children are average height and taller than their Dad. I liked making clothes for my daughter but never got into making clothes for the boys.

Those pants look really good - and they wouldn't be the easiest thing to make. 4H here was called Junior Farmers then later Rural Youth. I tried to make Vince some pyjamas once but borrowed a too-big pattern and, being pretty clueless, didn't think it would matter for pyjamas. He used to pull them right up to his armpits. That was the beginning of the end for my sewing days.

That was good - thank for the laugh. In 4H we learned to fit a pattern... In high school there was a club call Future Farmers. Can you tell I lived in the country?

Only because I learned as a child, and my mother sewed too. I don't do it any more - I gave away my machines and occasionally I will do hand mending but most thing that need repair go to a seamstress. (Too old to bother)

My husband would never wear those bright colors; he doesn't even like them on a shirt. He used to have a deep purple shirt and that's the brightest he'd wear. I learned to sew in Home Ec class and sewed my own clothes once I left home too. I never had time to sew for my kids though. My mom did sew most of our clothes though until we got hand-me-down's from our cousins which we liked.
