I was treated to pancakes and maple syrup while I was spending a few days at my Nephew's in Colorado. He got that syrup all the way from the mountains where we had been for a day. He said syrup that is bought there is special. Was I not fortunate that I got to taste it?
One can buy maple syrup online but there is no guarantee that it is genuine. Do you buy food online?

One has to be careful what one gets online So many brands are marketed but many are not genuine.

I will not want to take a chance with it. May be when friends and family I know who are in the US visit us next time I should ask them to get us a bottle or two.

I buy British foods online. We have some selection of British foods here, but it is actually cheaper online.
I don't buy the "real" maple syrup. I'm a bit of a spend thrift, so I don't want to pay upwards of $5.00 for the real stuff.

I did check the rate of real maple syrup and it sure is expensive.
I buy chocolates online and there too I am told some are fake. There were reviews on Nestle's Wall Street assorted candies sold by Amazon in and the reviews were bad. One cannot trust online items blindly. My niece got me those from Australia a couple of times and they were really good.

@allknowing I always check ratings before shopping with unfamiliar merchants. I try to do all of my amazon based shopping via amazon itself and not one of the sellers.
The grocery store I work at has several variants of what is supposed to be real maple syrup. These variants are the private label (our store's brand). I don't know that I can trust it to be the real thing, but I imagine it would taste very good regardless.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Amazon takes in a whole lot of sellers but not everything is from Amazon itself. But Amazon gives us guarantee for whatever is placed through them

As for the maple syrup... I think that it all comes down to how long it has been cooked. My dad made all of our maple syrup and it had this smokiness to it and it was a deep, dark brown color. Everything pales in comparison now!!

Nothing like anything home made. Did you not pick up from your father?

We have sugar houses around here that makes maple syrup every spring. It is delicious. You should take some when you go home. I've never bought anything on line except vacations.

My visit to the US was a long time ago. Must ask those who visit us to get me some.
For me online shopping has become a way. I find it very convenient.
