I fantasize about going to stay in the Grand Hotel in Mackinac Island for the gala they have annually to celebrate the movie Somewhere in Time. A portion of this lovely romance fantasy was filmed there. I get a weekly news email from them telling me what is going on there at the Grand Hotel. They have a Lilac Festival there in May or April. It would be so splendid to stay there for a few days. The 130 year old building with black and white checkered floors, brightly colored carpeting, couches velvet covered and frilly upholstery, and the white whicker chairs. The formal dining and ambiance seems to take you back to the Victorian Age. Just my cup of tea. They have a gala there annually where member of the fan club wear clothes of the period and it is quite a special event. I am finding that there are 12 such historical hotels around the country. One in New York, Chicago, Beverly Hills, Baltimore, Cape May, San Diego, Washington D.C., St. Croix, Puerto Rico, Boston, Memphis and Mackinac Island. I am sure they all have their charm but the Grand Hotel is where I'd love to go. I wish I had extra money to travel and see this place. No automobiles are allowed and you have to either walk, ride bicycle or ride on wagon to get anywhere. Oh, I know if I scrimped and didn't do a lot of extras I could save and do it in oh, say ten or fifteen years. But, I don't want to scrimp. A once in a lifetime thing should not be scrimped upon. I want to enjoy it in elegance and stay in a nice room. I'd want to find a vintage dress to wear to the gala and not some old dowdy thing. And seeing New Orleans that I missed out on while there with the carnival back in the early 70's. Taking the train is such a romantic way to travel too. I'd really want to go 1st class or not go and miss so much to scrimp and go 'on a shoe string'. Visit the Grand Hotel here:

That sounds like such a lovely place to be. It would definitely be something I'd want to go all out for and be as authentic as possible with. I am sure that there is some consignment shop or goodwill or salvation army that has a dress fitting such an occasion. I am sure they don't have one dating from the victorian era but maybe they'd have an elegant piece that would be fitting all the same. --- There are so many different complexities to anxiety and depression. So many different disorders that cause our brains and hearts so much havoc. My family has a history of problems of this sort. My grandmother says she thinks there were relatives of hers that had bipolar problems. Of course this was in a time where bipolar wasn't even known. If I'm not mistaken it wasn't until the 1970's that bipolar was starting to be recognized. We still have a long way to go with understanding or appreciating the many different facets of depression. I count myself lucky today, because even though I've had a past riddled with depression and lots of anxiety, I have found a way to cope without medication. I know that's not a possibility for everyone. I know medicine does help some and I am glad it does, but it's not something I ever want to have to try. --- I hope one day you'll be able to visit the grand hotel. Do they have footage from past events you can watch? Or even a webcam set up in the lobby? It might help you relax even more, being able to see the goings on in "Real time".

You are lucky. I haven't been able to find a med to help the depression but take Rimaron for the anxiety. Thank goodness. I hope I get to go too but I doubt it. It would take thousands of $ I don't think I will ever have.

@celticeagle I have a smartypig account I haven't added money into in awhile. It's a savings account made for things like this, vacations or items you want but can't afford. They have different perks, savings on your savings if you put some of the money on visa cards or amazon cards. They've since switched to sallie mae banking, and so things may have changed.. Anyway, what I was getting at is, have you thought of trying to find a High Yielding savings account to drop some spare change into? It may not ever get you to the grand, but perhaps it will get you somewhere else for a little while.

I've been to Mackinaw Island once in my lifetime but didn't plan ahead and barely had the funds to take the ferry back again. Back in the seventies when I was still married to my ex-husband we would go up and camp in Cheboygan or thereabouts. I don't remember where we were that year exactly, but he decided he wanted to take the ferry over so we did. Once there we saw how much everything cost and really couldn't do much of anything. We could see the Grand Hotel from the dock, but we didn't stay long as the day was too hot to walk around much. We have friends that would invite the group up to their condo on the island, but with us working a lot we never made time to go along with the rest of them.

I'd like to go in the spring for the Lilac Festival. I'd plan way ahead so I could stay at least for a four day weekend or so. What a dream huh?

@celticeagle My dream is that we can move down to Tennessee sometime in the future and get away from this cold weather in the winter months. Whether we'd move back up here in the spring, I'm not sure. Whether it ever works out or not I don't know that either, but it's good to have such goals. It helps us keep on keeping on.
