Coasters For My Daughter

Canada
February 10, 2017 8:20am CST
A while ago I said I was painting coasters for my daughter and several of my myLot friends asked me to post a photo when I'm done. I'm Done! Because my friends know I paint on slate, when they find naked slate they bring it to me. Someone gave me these unpainted coasters, six of them tied together with raffia, with three soft circles attached to the bottoms so it won't mar what ever furniture they are set on. . A pretty package, but I put them on a shelf of other things I might paint on some day... My daughter found them last fall and asked me to paint on them and give them to her... She will be here next week so I wanted them to be done and ready for her. Because she is an avid gardener I started with flowers and thought of going on to veggies but both the flowers and the thought of veggies bored me. I didn't want to repaint the flowers so I decided to do three sets of two. The last two sets were just circles and lines and dots. I loved the look. So now all six are ready. I will tie them up with the raffia again. I don't use coasters so I'm glad she found them and glad she wanted them. What about you? Do you use coasters?

@PainsOnSlate , they look so freaking COOL!!!! I wouldn't want to put anything on them. Yes, I use coasters, but shooowee, mine are boring compared to these.

They are painted in acrylics and sprayed with a matte finish so I will have my daughter let me know if they don't behave when used. I'm not sure about the finish and water...but I have had paintings hanging outside for years and they don't fade or peel off so fingers crossed for the coasters. and Thank You, glad you like them.

I do use a few coasters because I've messed up furniture that wasn't great and now that I have nicer things I want to make sure I don't wreck those too. Those coasters are lovely. I see only two with flowers though, no veggies. The ones on the top look like they may have taken a long time to do because of the smaller designs. Is this similar to what you do when you sell things you make?

The ones on the top did take longer for the reason you mentioned, I just started using that as a top border for some smaller signs I made last week. These are a third of the size of the art signs I do for the stores. but i had the slate (that size) and I wanted to do something on them,,,so this is what I did. I didn't do veggies and I don't particularly like the flowers but my daughter will. I did the others just because I wanted them to be different (creative)

@PainsOnSlate I'd think that whatever it is you decide to put on your 'creations' that they will be both different and creative. No doubt about that.

@MarshaMusselman they are different, and thats the reason they sell so well..

We don't either, our tables are covered with mats and fabric, and our outdoors and sun-room are glass so don't need them either, My daughter will use them, she has some nice wood that does need a coaster..

@rebelann At the moment that is what I do, I like using recycled things so it used to be old wood from the grape boxed that were thrown out when the wineries started using plastic and now its slate Its different and impresses people when they touch it...I have a few canvases hanging in my house that I painted but I haven't used canvas since we moved to Canada about 40 years ago...

Very pretty - I like all of them. I only use an insulated plastic tumbler - for two reasons. I break glass too often and since I always use ice in my glass a regular glass would require a coaster since the glass sweats.

@AbbyGreenhill me too but it doesn't sweat, at least it doesn't here in the north where we usually don't get hot hot hot...

They are lovely! We always use coasters on our wood furniture to prevent stains and rings. We don't have to on our granite island. Both sons use them, too.

I know my daughter uses them but I'm not so sure about my boys. We don't need them, we usually sit around the table when we have company..

@DianneN It was a fluke that I had round ones...I might have think of using my broken pieces and make semi round or square... My dining table is the same, a heavy pad and then tablecloth but I also add place mats on top of the table cloth, makes it easy, to just toss the mats in the wash and the cloth is still clean...

@PainsOnSlate When we use our dining room table at home, we use a pad and tablecloth. Down here, we use placemats most of the time. The coasters are for drinks in other areas of the house. Yours would awesome for Florida. Wish I could buy some!

No I am not a coaster person nor have I had any desire to use them. Maybe if I had nice furniture and did some entertaining. But that is a cool idea painting on them, and could be a Great idea for someone else.

This is made of round slate? Seems fun activity to paint. I make coasters using crochet. I made some watermelon coasters before for my mug

Crochet is a great idea, They sound pretty, yes, this slate came round, made for coasters I guess, the slate I usually buy is square or oblong.

I have several sets of coasters, pains... but honestly, no, I don't use them at all. My coffee table and end tables all have glass tops, so I don't bother using a coaster on them. It is just as easy to wipe any spots off the tables as to get the coasters out. I am sorry you weren't enthused about the flowered coasters. I believe I like them better than the two other styles you have there. (Two of those almost look like macrame... Was that your intention there? They are nice, too.) Notice, "like them better" is how I said that and how I meant that. I do like the other styles, I just prefer the flowered ones.

@PainsOnSlate I can easily see how that would work out, pains. Even to the flowers now boring you. It happens. I am glad you thought it through and found something else that sells well for you!

I have been painting all my life and flowers bored me as I started the coasters. They were first and I thought no more, lets just use colors and shapes, make them more interesting..so I did, brilliant ideas out of my head and no macrame in my mind. Now most of my art that I sell so well is words and shapes, dots and color...There is no problem selling them and its the words that sells them but its the shapes and color that is my favorite part...

Those are lovely coasters. We don't use coasters anymore. I made decorative coasters a few years ago using discarded bathroom tiles. It was a bit tedious having to scrub the tiles clean and letting them dry before painting on them. But I'd love to do it again. We still have a huge tub of bathroom tiles in the backyard!

I've never tried tiles, did you have a finish over the paint so the paint won't wash off? I use a spray made protect the finish on my painting. i paint on slate which is a natural stone.

oh my you were busy. Of course I like the one with the sunflowers the best. We don't have a table out at the moment that requires the use of coasters. Maybe, just maybe, some day I will get the coffee table uncovered in my craft room and brought back out to the living room.

We don't use them either, but my daughter asked for them and of course I said yes. I started with the sunflower, my daughter had hundreds of them in her yard every late summer. She has amazing gardens but I got bored....so I did other things on the coasters...

She does love them and the coasters with the rocking chair shows she liked them enough to do the rocking chair with the same design as the coasters.

The coasters are beautiful, and I know your daughter will love them. They are such nice works of art I imagine she will be hesitant to use them as coasters. We sporadically use coasters here, and have an eclectic collection of stone, plastic, and even leather coasters.

I don't remember where I got the coasters I know I've had them for a long time - years stashed in my art stuff. Perhaps a yard sale? You might look and I will too next time I get to Michael's Art store, slate is getting more and more popular.
