A blast from the past

Max and one of mom's turtles share a meal.

In 2010 I spent most of my time with mom at her house, she was 93 then, and since mom was boring I made many videos and took a lot of photos. Mom had about 10 or so box turtles and as you can see Max didn't mind sharing a meal with the turtle. In fact, the turtle moved towards Max and like the smart kitty he is he moved out of the turtles way. Did you know that turtles can actually run? They're pretty fast too.

They are fascinating to watch. Of course they can't run as fast as cats, dogs or people but still they can run.

@rebelann rebelann1949, I see the picture and that is cute to see them eating on the same plate. I did not know that turtles can run fast.

Well, they do run faster than people give them credit for.

I think they like to go slow if they do not feel threatened @Hannihar

@rebelann rebelann1949, they have given turtles a raw deal by saying they are slow.

I have seen turtles take off at a good rate of speed. Of course, these are the snapping turtles that I am referring to. If one gets a bit of food off of the bank of the marsh and thinks that another animal is going to take it away it seems to run to the water to eat its meal in peace.

@rebelann Sandy is not afraid of snapping turtles. She has actually killed one that was quite large. It was coming from the pond across the way to the marsh behind our house. We were both quite amazed that she was able to kill it. I don't know why she likes to eat fresh meat but there are times when she amazes me at what she kills. It is also rather gross.

She sounds like Sugarbear, she was a husky mix and would hunt for her own food even though they always fed her dog food @Shellyann36 Is Sandy mixed husky?

Mom's didn't have a problem intimidating her kitties, naturally the kitties were respectful

I wish the one I squashed with my car had known that he could outrun me, it was traumatic for both of us lol

Great photo - was your mom keeping all those turtles as pets?

Yes, but not on purpose. In 1962 she almost ran over a turtle so she checked on it and found it had a damaged shell so she brought it home to keep it safe. Well, it laid eggs and eventually we counted 15 turtles.

Turtles are fearless when hungry and actually will challenge a cat, cats are smart, they jump out of their way.

Doodles notified us of a box turtle laying eggs in our front yard. When she covered them, she scooted to the pond across the street. The babies never made it to term. Max is wise! Great photo, too!

The babies are easy pickens for the birds and even other turtles. Too bad really.
