Beachcombing, driftwood and shells.

Greece

I love beachcombing especially after a windy day when the sea is more likely to have tossed out some interesting items. My daughter, who looks for sea glass, and I were checking out the beach last month and I found a likely looking piece of bark. Initially I just gave it a coat of Mod Podge to toughen it up and then it sat on my desk waiting for inspiration, which was slow in coming. Eventually I remembered I had some shells and stones, which were a previous find, and the process of turning the piece of bark into a presentable ornament began. It now adorns a toilet and has replaced a rather boring little basket of stones.

When I lived by the beach, I went out every morning looking for beautiful sea glass. I miss those days.

@TiarasOceanView And I have to be content with walking along the gravel road in front of my house. Great view of our prairie sky.

@LadyDuck that is a pity especially as it would have taken some time to get a collection.

I have never looked for a good piece of driftwood before, mostly I look at stones because they come in assorted colours. Now I have found a use for one piece I might look for more.

@41CombedaleRoad I loved to collect driftwood when we went vacationing in Tuscany in Italy, but when we moved I had to throw all of them.

That is so ingenious and pretty. My dad did that as a hobby. I have some of his collection at home.

Nature is inspiring, the problem is that we take it for granted.

@just4him When I look at the stars I think of God and he feels distant and I feel small but when I look at nature in the smallest details I think of His artistic touch and careful design and then God feels closer to me and I do not feel so small after all.

I have a bunch of sea glass. The biggest deposit of sea glass in the world is a Northern California beach.

How interesting. I have a collection of shells in a wicker basket in my bathroom. Wish I got to the ocean more often.

@celticeagle Isn't that a myth? A big shell perhaps might have that effect but they have to be bought these days.

Driftwood is ideal for making dry flower arrangements. I used them generously for my exhibition of flower arrangements. What you have looks pretty artistic

My husband spotted that piece. There are very few rough days when driftwood can be found. I love the randomness of it and it must be perfect for your flower arrangements.

I wish I could go beach combing but I don't want to drive hundreds of miles just to do that. You're lucky to have beach front close to your home.

I like your description about it having a raw beauty. I wonder where it came from, there is some romance in it, rather like finding a bottle with a note. It looks much nicer now than it did when it was first washed up.
