No Need for Words

JJ (@JolietJake) has just written about posting a photo and how it might be difficult to interpret without additional information. I think this photo which was taken in Nannup, Western Australia, pretty much speaks for itself. Recently we took some Taiwanese couch-surfers to Nannup. I've posted about the flood levels that have wreaked havoc in the town from time to time. One of the walking paths along the river has been closed due to dangerous conditions. The message given by the sign is quite clear to anyone I think. Are most of your road signs self-explanatory or do they need words to help the interpretation?

That makes it very clear. Our signs are done in that way too.

Well, it's very clear to you and I, James. Seems it wasn't so clear to @Jessicalynnt.

Picture is clear though words are unclear. And it is enough to take precaution for the driver or walker.

It does indicate that it might be dangerous, doesn't it?

It's amazing sometimes how people don't pay attention to signs whether they are just picturesque, verbal or both @JudyEv .

@JudyEv They probably figure nobody is paying attention anyway, so why spend the money.

That's true. They try to limit the number of signs in a certain area sometimes as it just gets ridiculous.

Here we have deer crossing signs with deer image. Do you have kangaroo crossing signs?

We do have duck and tortoise crossing signs. Our ducks and tortoises are a very superior breed! The kangaroos are too stupid to take any notice of signs. :)

@MALUSE Wow, that's different. And we saw one giving the maximum speed for army tanks. I think that was in France.

@MALUSE I suppose we noticed it because we would NEVER see tanks on the streets or roads here.

Sometimes too many words will be confusing. It is fine to have a clear sign and people will understand it.

I admire the people who come up with the signs. They are usually very clear in their meaning.

I'm not literate in sign images. I need words on any signs not as common as the stop sign.

I could have cropped it more. Now the photo issue is fixed I could perhaps replace it and it might show up better.

When I first looked at that sign, it looks like a person is in danger of falling off a cliff. With your post I'm going to assume that is water and the person is in danger of being caught in a flood. Most of the signs here don't have words on them. They are pretty self explanatory.

It's funny sometimes what people miss. I'll say to Vince 'did you see such and such' and he might have missed it completely. Not always road signs but sometimes it might be.

Hmmmmmmmmmm I don't know. Maybe on signs like that there is no need but for the road signs that only people who knows how to drive can understand maybe I need some explanation.

I guess it is always better to have an explanation but if you don't know the language.....

That is an interesting sign. Most of the signs here are self explanatory and useful for those who may not have a grasp of the language but can easily interpret an image

It is interesting how they come up with images which convey a precise message.
