Day 162 Proverbs 17:23 Proverbs 17:23 A wicked man takes a gift out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment. Bribes have been common since the beginning of time. You can change a person’s mind, even a verdict for a price. If a person can get ahead by bribing someone else, they will do it. However, it isn’t honest. When it came to ruling his kingdom, Solomon relied on wisdom and discernment from God. However, he saw a lot of bribery going on and warned the people about such practices. Bribery and dishonest practices can be found everywhere, even in government. Jesus is a good example of perverted justice. His teaching caused a lot of conflict with the Pharisees and scribes, because he taught the people the Law of Moses the way it was intended, not with all the perversions added to it by the Sanhedrin. As such, they began to look for ways to get rid of him. During his trial, they brought people forward who would lie about what he said and did, but they couldn’t get agreement. However, in a desperate act, the chief priest asked Jesus if he was the Son of God. Though the trial was illegal, being done at night and in secret, and though they brought forth all kinds of witnesses to lie about him, it was the truth for which he really went to the cross. Jesus is the Son of God, sinless, holy, righteous, and it was because of his death, we have eternal life today. However, the path to the cross was a dishonest one. Today, people are quick to point out the dishonest practices of businesses and government, yet at the same time looking the other way when they take part in dishonest practices themselves. There will always be dishonest people. It is up to you to discern the truth from the lie and not allow anyone to persuade you to part with your money. Let’s pray: Father, give me discernment when dealing with people. Help me see the truth from the lie in every transaction I take part in. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen. Many of the corrupt practices we see in the world today were there centuries ago.
