Softly, softly, saki monkey

Do you like going to the zoo? When we visited Singapore a few years ago, we went to their very modern zoo. One of the intriguing creatures we saw was this
white-faced saki monkey (Pithecia pithecia).
These are found in the South American states of Brazil, Venezuela, French Guiana, Guyana and Suriname. Although they spend a lot of time in the understory and lower canopy of forests, and are adept at swinging from tree to tree, they forage on the ground for fruits, nuts, seeds, and insects.
They feed during the day but sleep high in the forest canopy at night. Captive animals may live for 36 years but in their natural habitat, 14 years is about their life-span. Aren't they unusual looking?

@TheHorse I think around 20 would be a really long life for a wild horse. Their teeth go then they get poor etc. I think with good care many live to their late 20s or more but 35 is pretty unusual. You must have really taken good care of her. Ponies often seem to live longer than horses.

That's an interesting looking monkey. I never got to see one, but when I was in Panama, we could hear Howler Monkeys roaring everyday when we were in the jungle. You can hear them up to three miles away.

@JudyEv - I researched them for a paper. They are in danger of going extinct.

@teamfreak16 If they do so well in captivity maybe they'll breed in captivity too. Can I ask what you were doing in Panama?

The zoo that is closest to us is the Washington National Zoo. It is free to go to and it is large and pretty. But I have not been there in a while. I once have visited the Baltimore Zoo, but it cost to go there. I really like the zoo a lot!

It does look like a mask. They are classified as small monkeys and reach a length of 30 to 50cms (11 to 20 inches) and weigh up to 2 kilos (4.4 pounds) so they are not really very big at all. I thought they looked bigger than that until I researched it.

It just struck me that while we always thought keeping animals in captivity was a rude thing to do i notice they live longer as per what you have stated in your post. Would you keep animals in captivity?

Well, if you have fungus features what else can you expect? He certainly looks a bit sad.

@JudyEvans _The zoos in the Philippines are pitiful. Animal rights have been protesting their inhumane facilities but government don't care.

Yes, I like going to the zoo. I also went to the zoo in Singapore. I am surprised that there were a little kind of monkeys available on the woods and we could just took photos besides them. And these monkeys were free to go anywhere. That's very interesting. Look at my son: He was quite scared since he hadn't tried to get so close to the monkeys

@JudyEv We visited all the different zoos in Singapore except for the night safari. Since I was afraid we would be so tired as we already had schedule in the daytime. Besides, I also think it would be too difficult to take good photos there at night.

They are, really good picture. We went to the zoo last summer..a local zoo near where my parents live..and the majority of the animals were asleep! However, it was a very hot day, unusually hot for that area.
